“Yeah, sorry; it’s just been a long day.”

“How’s the campaign going?” Elizabeth asked.

“It’s pretty dull. I’m writing my stuff and sending it in, but nothing big has broken yet.”

“How long are you going to do this for?”

“Another month, at least; unless my editor wises up and realizes there’s nothing here. This candidate is pretty boring behind the scenes. She can turn it on for the camera, but that’s about it.”

“That’s so long away from home, Palmer,” Elizabeth said.

“Home is with you.”

Elizabeth smiled wider and replied, “Myhome is with you, too.”

“It’s still far too long until I get to see you,” Palmer said.

“I know, love. But when you’re here, I promise, we’ll have as much time together as possible. I’ve already delegated everything I can for the wedding to other people so that we can have at least a couple of days just for us.”

“Thank you. I need that.” Palmer noticed something. “Why are you on your phone? Are you not at the office already?”

Elizabeth smiled and said, “I asked Rebecca to get your hotel information from you to send you a little gift.”

“I texted it to her yesterday, but I don’t–” There was a knock on Palmer’s door. The sound from the knock wasn’t just on her side of the chat. “Babe?”

Elizabeth laughed and said, “Palmer, open the door.”

Palmer’s eyes went wide. She practically tossed her laptop aside, jumped out of bed, and yanked open the hotel door. Standing in front of her was the love of her life.

“You’re here?” she asked softly, afraid that if she said it too loudly, Elizabeth would disappear.

“I am. Can I kiss you now? I’ve missed you like crazy.”

Palmer pulled on Elizabeth’s hand and hugged her first, wanting to feel her solid form against her body. Then, she pulled back and pressed their lips together.

“I missed you. What are you doing here?”

Elizabeth stared at her, running her hands up and down Palmer’s chest.

“I missed you, too. And I know you’ve been lonely out on the road. I just asked security if I could come to the middle of nowhere, Virginia, and escort you to a much nicer house I’m renting for us for the next two days while you’re here. They said yes.”

“Babe, you have no idea how happy I am right now. I’ve been pretty miserable lately.”

“I know. I could see it in your face,” Elizabeth replied. “Let’s get you packed up. The house Rebecca found for us has a fireplace.”

“I love you.”

“I love you, too,” Elizabeth told her.

???

“How’s Camilla?” Elizabeth asked as they lay snuggled up in bed later.

“She’s amazing. Thank you for helping us find that new school for her. Her old one was fine, but this one is so much better for her. And it’s closer to home, so my parents get to see her a lot more than before.”

“I asked them not to tell your parents about the scholarship she got being sponsored by me. I hope that’s okay. I don’t want them to think I’m trying to interfere.”

“They wouldn’t. They’re not prideful like that, but the school hasn’t said anything.”
