“Palmer, I think I’d like to be alone tonight if that’s okay. I flew here, and with the time difference, I–”

“No, you’re right. I get it. I just said the same thing to my ex a few days ago.”

“What? Anna?” Elizabeth asked.

“She stopped by my apartment when I got back. I told her I was jet-lagged when she wanted to talk, and now I’m doing the same thing to you. Why don’t you call me when you wake up tomorrow? My parents are picking up Camilla. I’ll have most of the day to myself. We can do some tourist things in the city if you want; if security thinks it’s okay.”

“Anna wanted to talk to you?” Elizabeth asked.

“Yeah, the conversation lasted all of five minutes.”

“Did she…”

“Elizabeth, I’m here.” Palmer took Elizabeth’s free hand and added, “I’m here, okay? Now, get some sleep. We can talk later.”

“Okay.” Elizabeth nodded. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Palmer.”

She leaned in and kissed Palmer on the cheek.

“Good night, Your Majesty.”

“Good night, Miss Honeycutt.”

Elizabeth smiled until the door closed between them.

CHAPTER 29

“Well, how is it?” Victoria asked.

“Different than I thought it would be,” Elizabeth replied.

“How so? Is the food terrible or something?”

“No.” Elizabeth laughed. “Palmer’sdifferent.”

“Oh.” Victoria’s tone changed. “Bad different?”

“No. I don’t know.” Elizabeth sighed.

“Okay… Can you explain what youdoknow? Maybe I can help.”

“She knows, Vicky.”

“Knows what?”

Elizabeth shifted in bed.

“Knows I’m gay. I told her about Teagan before she left St. Rais.”

“You told her? Why didn’t you tell me that you told her?”

“I’d had a lot on my mind, and I wasn’t even sure it mattered. Palmer promised she’d never say anything, and I trust her. I wasn’t sure I was coming here, anyway. I guess I thought I could tell her and not come to America for the holidays, and then…”

“And then what? Never talk about it again? Never talk to Palmer again?” Victoria asked.

“I don’t know. I didn’t think it through. She figured it out mostly, anyway. I just filled in the blanks.”

“Did she tell you how stupid you’re being, staying in the closet whenyou’rethe Queen now and Dad is gone? I’ll never understand his issue with the whole thing.”
