“Damn. I thought about asking her out when she was here, but I didn’t know, and I didn’t want to make things awkward.”

“Youwhat?” Elin asked, glaring at her.

Alex laughed wildly and added, “I’m kidding. I knew you had a crush on her. I just wasn’t sure you were ready to admit it to yourself that you might be into a woman. You never told me you were gay, so I just assumed it was a crush or that you… Well, didn’t know yourself yet, I suppose.”

“Well, Iaminto her,” Elin said. “A lot.”

“Yeah, youloveher,” Palmer added.

“Why do I associate with you, people?” Elin asked, only half-joking.

“So, it went well, then? Your date?” Elizabeth asked, taking Palmer’s hand in her own.

“It did.”

“Did you two…” Mari didn’t finish her sentence.

“Mari!” Lillian said. “No, wait… I want to know, too. Did you?”

“No, it was the first date.”

“Did you at least kiss her?” Palmer asked.

“Yes,” Elin said.

“And?”

“Fireworks,” Elin replied wistfully.

“Damn,” Alex said. “That good?”

Elin nodded and replied, “The best.”

“So, where are you going on your next date?”

“I don’t know,” she said honestly.

“You don’t know?” Lillian asked. “Just do something at home or at her place.”

“I’ve never had a date at the palace, and not everyone there knows yet.”

“What about her place?”

“She lives with her sister. And she’s very nice and might be gone – she’s a chef, so we’d have a few hours of privacy, I guess.”

“Privacy?” Alex asked with a quirked eyebrow. “Whatever for?”

“Oh, shut up,” Elin said.

Later that night, Alex retired to her bedroom to get some reading done, Mari went to her room to talk to Erik, Lillian went to text some of her friends, and Palmer left to go tuck the kids in. That left Elizabeth and Elin sitting in the room with the still-roaring fireplace.

“She loves saying goodnight to them. I think it’s one of her favorite things,” Elizabeth shared. “It’s one of mine, too, but she’s reading a book to them tonight, so I’m letting her have this one.”

“I’m glad you were able to bring them. I love those two,” Elin said of Sophia and Leif.

“Soph has asked to start joining me in meetings when she’s not in school,” Elizabeth said.
