“She’ll find someone one day.” Elin looked up at Ingrid. “Idid.”

Ingrid smiled and kissed her. Elin tasted the wine on Ingrid’s lips and smiled.

“So, if let’s just say – for the sake of planning – you and I were to have something to announce…” Ingrid began. “Because you’re the Queen, we could cut the line if we wanted.”

Elin tilted her head a bit and said, “Something you want to discuss, Ingrid?” She lifted an eyebrow at her.

“What? No, I just meant… I was interested more in the protocol than anything else.”

Elin laughed a little and said, “The movie’s over. I’ve finished my wine and most of yours. Any chance you’d like to go to bed and practice some of that sexy diplomacy with me?”

Ingrid nodded.

???

“Her Majesty, Queen Elin I, and Miss Ingrid Olson,” the announcer said as Elin and Ingrid walked into the hall arm-in-arm.

“Are you ready for this?” Elin asked.

“I still think I’m better behind the scenes,” Ingrid replied, smiling as everyone in the room stared at them.

“That dress disagrees with you, my love,” Elin told her. “Youlookamazing. Youareamazing. I can’t tell you how happy I am that you’re here with me.”

They stopped when they made their way to the dance floor. Ingrid had been prepared for this. Tonight was an annual event. The sovereign and their partner started off the event officially by sharing a dance. Elin held out her hand for Ingrid to take, which she did, and they turned toward one another.

“I’ve never danced in front of people before,” Ingrid shared.

“I’ve got you,” Elin replied, placing her hand on the small of Ingrid’s back. The music started up, and she added, “Just follow my lead.”

Ingrid nodded.

“After this, I was thinking…” Elin said.

Ingrid knew she was trying to distract her from having to dance in front of a room full of very important people.

“I’m going to trip over my dress,” Ingrid said, looking down.

“No, you won’t. I had them make it shorter for you, remember? After you had that conversation with the royal tailor about my dress, all I had to do was threaten you’d talk to her again if she didn’t make it just a little shorter for your first dance in front of a crowd,” Elin said, smiling at her. “And you’re doing fine. Just breathe.”

“Easy for you to say; you were made for this stuff.”

“Andyouwere made forme,” Elin replied.

Ingrid squinted at her and then smiled as she sighed.

“So, what were you thinking?” she asked.

“That after this, we could go to the kitchen, and you could make me Skolebrød.”

Ingrid laughed and tucked her head against Elin’s neck. Then, she looked around the room, seeing the former King and Queen smiling at their daughter, Mari looking lovingly at Erik, Christian with his arm around Amalie, and Lillian talking to Sarah Anne. She noticed Palmer and Elizabeth watching them. Palmer gave her a little wave, which made Ingrid laugh more. Suddenly, Ingrid felt this calmness rush over her. She wasn’t an impostor; she was right where she was supposed to be. And she’d never been happier.
