“You are mine to protect.”

His to protect.

His.

I should hate that. I truly should hate being anyone’s, but the fact was, my wolf loved it. She loved the feel of him around us. She loved the odd itch of the pack’s presence. My human mind wanted to love it all, but I couldn’t stop myself from worrying the other shoe would drop.

“Mate, relax. I will protect you. The pack would let nothing happen to its luna.”

My cheek was warm against his furnace of a body. My entire body was warm against him. It was calming, like a warm shower. Like the warm showers I’d had when I came here. A luxury, for sure. He was my luxury.

“Okay. So what should I do as the luna?”

He chuckled under my touch.

“You will have many, many duties, but today? Today, let me show you your new home.”

I glanced out the window.

“But it’s night? Not day. Someone kept me in bed for far too long.”

A step back gave me a clear view of my giant male.

“Oh, my dear mate. I would plan to keep you in bed until you are pregnant with my pups if you would let me.”

I shivered, but also my heart spiked.

“Not yet, Kiara. Not yet. You will need time to heal. So for now, we go and see the lands. Night, day. There is no problem for your beautiful wolf. Come. I have a surprise.”

He pulled at my hand, and I stopped.

“Clothes?”

He shrugged.

“I forget you have not always had your wolf. No one here would dare linger on my mate. Also, we will shift the moment we are outside. Not that the place doesn’t always smell like wet dog.”

I couldn’t stop the wrinkle of my nose as my wolf howled in offense.

Devon laughed. “She didn’t like that, did she?”

I shook my head, and the mood lightened as we ran through the halls, down the stairs, and burst through the front door.

The front door of my home. I could come and go. I could be free here.

The night air scented of lilac and fresh rain and a sandalwood musk that only my mate could emit. I hadn’t spent near enough time appreciating him. He hadn’t been mine. Hadn’t been mine to want or claim. He had been a means to freedom. Until he wasn’t, and the first desire of my mate had hit me.

He was all lean, chiseled muscle. I’d never seen someone so big and so scary. Except, he’d never been that to me. How had this male been that boy? My wolf was nearly drooling.

“I see that look in your eyes but wait. I promise there will be plenty of time for that.”

He pulled me off the porch and mid-spring he shifted into his wolf.

I stopped in awe. The man was something, but the wolf?

Shift, princess.

I’d done this only a handful of times, and every time was a shot of adrenaline.
