Someone was jumping behind us. I could see the shadow projected on the rock in front of me.

“It’s Sarah, isn’t it?”

My mate simply nodded, but she never looked away.

“Perhaps I have a target. Perhaps it’s karma. But I got you, don’t I?” she said.

I was so angry the muscles of my mouth ached as I pressed my lips thin and wanted to protest that I was not worth any or all of this. The way she reached up and kissed me though?

It almost pushed away the fears that not only had I scared her with the whole love thing, but with the fact her old pack was too close and not at all easy to control. They were not allowed in the pack house and, at least at night, they were locked away in the old quarters when our pack had been older and less established. That hadn’t protected her though.

I suppose the few left could either find comfort in the extra space or we could have more bloodshed. I was fine with either.

“Devon, let’s go back to the house. Please?”

I nodded, but I wasn’t about to release her and carried her to the shore, where I shifted her in my arms, slipping my hand under her knees.

“Oh, my goddess. Kiara. I’m so sorry. I never saw them coming. Are you okay? I ran as fast as I could to get help.”

I nodded to Sarah. She was a good friend, and I nodded to two of my wolves that had come from Sarah’s call. They had been doing as needed, patrolling. But lucky for me, I couldn’t leave my mate for too long and I was close by. She wanted freedom, but I needed to know she was safe. Luckily for me, I seemed to find every excuse I could to patrol areas close to her. I’d been able to beat everyone here. With or without alpha strength, I would have beaten them here.

“You’ve all given me nothing less than I’d have expected for your future Luna and your pack. Take the night off. You will all be recognized at the next feast.”

Sarah wouldn’t leave our side, and I didn’t push her away.

“Is she really okay?”

I kissed the top of Kiara’s head.

“Ask her. She is able to talk.”

Sarah stood closer.

“Kiara? Do you forgive me?”

That got her attention, her head flying up as she glared at Sarah.

“This wasn’t even your fault. Forgive you? I have nothing to forgive. Devon, put me down.”

I squeezed tighter.

“Not a chance in fucking hell. Why?”

She huffed.

“Well, I wanted to hug her. But, since you're just so damn clingy…”

She held me tighter, telling me that was a joke rather than a complaint.

“I suppose I’ll just settle with this. Sarah, you’re the sister I’d always wanted for myself. Thank you.”

Sarah seemed to be equally shaken up. I couldn’t think of a time when any of the wars had reached our own lands, and this might be my fault. Instead of murdering the other pack, I’d allowed them in. I’d allowed them here to hurt my mate.

“Sarah, come with us and then after a good night’s rest, let’s meet. I believe this is my fault, and perhaps you and Colton can help me fix it.”

Kiara clung to me. It didn’t escape how her heart rushed as I all but declared that perhaps to fix the problem, we would not be allowing the Cripple Creek Pack to survive any longer.

She nodded, and we walked in silence. No shifting, no running. No. Just time to think and wonder what kind of world this was.
