“He’s actually a little over. I need to start calling Team Big to walk him. I can’t control him anymore when he wants to chase a squirrel or rabbit. Yesterday, he went after an alligator, and the alligator was terrified!”

Mama Irene and the others walked out, and she spotted the massive fur ball sitting at the bottom of the stairs.

“There you are, you precious baby,” said the old woman. She skipped down the steps, kneeling in front of him, and he licked her face back and forth, up and down. “Now, now, what have I said about that. No licking my whole face.”

It was as if the dog was laughing at her, continuing to lick. She stood, and they all realized just how big this dog was going to be fully grown. He was as tall as her now. Tailor opened the front door, and Truck took off, nearly knocking him down as he ran down the hallway.

The entire group took off after him as Lucy was screaming at him to stop. When they crowded the doorway of Bone’s bedroom, his big head was lying beside Londyn’s hand. She smiled at him and then back at Bone.

“Can I keep him?” Bone laughed, shaking his head.

“How about we keep him here for now,” he said. “He doesn’t really belong to me. He belongs to Lucy and Sniff.”

“Oh, he doesn’t belong to us either,” said Lucy, smiling at the man. “He was a stray puppy brought in a few months ago. He actually fit in the palm of Sniff’s hand. He, uh, he’s grown a lot since then. He needs a good bath, but other than that, he’s housebroken, and he knows basic commands. He actually has an incredible ability to sniff out weapons.”

“What?” said all the men in unison.

“Uh huh,” laughed Lucy. “Watch. Truck. Search! Search, boy.”

Truck looked at her, then at each of the men in the room. Slowly, he moved around the room, sniffing each man. As he got to the end of the row, they all smirked, realizing he’d missed their weapons. Then, one by one, he went back to each man, leaping up onto his chest and barking in his face, baring his teeth. Tailor was first.

“Whoa, whoa, alright, good boy,” he said, pulling out his knife. Truck nodded as Tailor set it on the floor, then moved to Gaspar, doing the same. He pulled out the knife, and the dog didn’t move, his growl becoming louder.

“Lucy,” said Gaspar.

“Show him the weapon, Dad.” Gaspar pulled out his gun and held it out for the dog. Truck took it between his teeth and set it on the floor. He moved down the entire line of men doing the same thing over and over again. When he was done, he went to the massive armoire in the bedroom and barked.

“Damn,” muttered Bone. “I put my weapons in there until I could get a gun locker.”

“That’s a good boy!” said Lucy, handing him a treat. His tail went back and forth, slapping the legs of the men in the room. “You’re such a good boy, Truck!”

“We’ll give him a bath and then bring him back,” said Tailor. He connected the second leash Lucy had tucked in her pocket. “Let’s go, boy. Time for a swim.”

“Oh, no!” said Lucy.

Truck tugged the leash so hard Tailor didn’t have an option but to follow as Noah and Max ran after them.

“Is he going to be alright?” asked Londyn.

“Well, he’ll be clean. If you say swim to Truck, he thinks he gets to go for a swim in the river.”

The men all chuckled, but it was Londyn that had them all shocked. At first, she said nothing, just staring at Lucy. Then, she started to giggle. It was a tinkling, beautiful sound of laughter and an appreciation of life.

“Oh, that hurts,” she smiled, holding her jaw. “That was funny. Thank you.” Bone looked at Lucy, shaking his head.

“Thank you.”

CHAPTER TEN

“Hey, Luke.”

“Grady! What’s up?” he asked the man on the other end of the line. “How’s business at The Well? We haven’t been in a while.”

“I know that’s right,” he chuckled. “Y’all need to come and see my expansion. Finally got a deck big enough to hold all of y’all.”

“That’s good. I’ll let everyone know. What can I do for you?”

“I know y’all are busy, but Remy came by with a picture of a tattoo. Said if I saw anyone with that on their body, I should call you. Well, I got someone here now.”
