“It’s my name. It’s my number, but I don’t know your sister.” Maggie looked as though she were going to cry. She shook her head.

“She said she met you in a bar in LaJolla. She used to go out and party a lot, and she would go there because service members would go in sometimes. God, she was so stupid!” she said, wiping her eyes. “She called me the next day and said she’d had crazy, wild sex with you, I mean, not you.”

“LaJolla,” frowned Hoot. “Is that where Bone pushed the girl away, and Simon ended up with her?”

“Fuck me,” muttered HG.

“Simon?” asked Maggie.

“Yea, Simon Walters. He was in a platoon we were training.”

“Is he African American?” asked Maggie.

“He was mixed race,” said HG. “But, I’m sorry to tell you this, he passed away. He was killed during his last deployment.”

“Damn! Damn, damn, damn!” she yelled.

“Aunt Maggie, that’s another bad word,” said Wyatt. The men all smiled at her, cutting Wyatt’s waffle for him.

“I know, baby. Aunt Maggie is in trouble,” she said, trying to smile at him. “God, I’m in so much trouble.”

“Why don’t you let us help you,” said HG. “It’s what we do. Our family runs a security agency.”

“I can’t afford to pay you.” HG nodded at her.

“Let us worry about that.”

EXCERPT from HG

“He’s definitely not your child,” said Riley. “He is African American and Caucasian, but that’s all I know right now. We’re running his DNA through all the databases to see if we can find the father. I have confirmed that the aunt is real. She is a match as a relative for him.”

“Why is she so damn nervous?” asked Carl.

“Not sure,” said HG, looking through the glass at the woman and child coloring at one of the conference tables. “She just kept saying she can’t stay here and needed to get the boy to his father. I think it’s Simon Walters, but if that’s true, he’s dead.”

“Well, she can’t get him to the father if he’s dead or we don’t know who the fuck he is,” said Ben. “Who was the child’s mother? I mean her name.”

“Mary Turner,” said HG.

“Mary?” frowned Bone. “I seem to remember that being the woman’s name. I wasn’t paying a lot of attention, but I remember because I thought of Angel’s wife, Mary. She was trying to get with any Marine in the place. She ended up spending the night with that dick Simon Walters.”

“Simon Walters. I remember him. He was a total asshole,” said HG. “And he was African American, mixed if I remember right.”

“Well, that’s a place to start,” said Ace.

“Actually, it’s not,” said HG. “Simon Walters was killed during one of our last missions in Africa. That was about four years ago, right about the time that sweet little boy was born.”

“Plenty of time to have fathered that boy,” said Riley. HG nodded, looking at the boy, but looking more at Maggie Turner.

“I guess we have a place to start.”
