“What’s that, Aye?” He patted the seat next to him for her to take a seat closer.

“Someone also ledmethere… to you,” she said, moving his way. “Why? For what purpose? Why was I led right toyou?”

He ran his hands through her curly mane as she sat beside him. “Fate, darlin’. That’s what brought you to me.”

She snorted and shifted uncomfortably. “Are you ever serious?”

“I’m always serious,” he said, leaning in closer. “Like that night we…”

Something changed in her demeanor at his mention of their night together. Her eyes darkened, and lids fell heavy. She arched slightly so her chest nearly touched him as she swiped her tongue across her bottom lip.

Wit grinned and went on. “Slept together.”

“You mean…” Her words were breathy. “When we were really drunk andaccidentallyslept together?”

“Oh, neither of us drank that night, darlin’…” He stalled, searching for a reaction. “I was too shot up, and you…”

“Felt bad for you.” She was quick to playfully reply. “That’s all that was.”

“Ouch.”

“What?” she questioned. “You’d been shot several times. You’re like a magnet for that shit.”

He chuckled. “I do tend to get shot pretty often. I’m like some kind of human shield. Invincible really.”

“More like a cat with nine lives…” She smiled. “And always in heat.”

“Only for you, darlin’.” He had her right where he wanted her and flipped the script. “I think we can trust the team. We should be figuring out who tried to grab me and how the Dozen plays into it too.”

Disappointment seemed to lace her words as he took their saucy exchange back to business. “I’m already on it.”

Ayelish grabbed a laptop from the coffee table in front of them and pulled up a screen full of faces. “Any of these people look familiar to you? These were the agents you and the team encountered today.”

“Interesting. Your computer works?” he asked.

“Uh. Yeah. Needed to access this, so I put a pause on the jammer for a minute.”

He looked at his smartwatch and saw it was still offline. “Yet I’m still not able to…”

“It’s back on,” she said. “I only had it down a minute. Didn’t want to risk anyone picking us up out here.”

Wit just nodded, seeming skeptical.

“So anyone familiar?” she asked again and pointed at the faces lined up on the screen.

“Sure.” Wit began to point at all the familiar faces. The Keepers. “These guys.”

She rolled her eyes. “Obviously. I mean any of the others who were there today. And to be clear, I’m not referring to the Dozen or anyone from our team. You know what I mean, Wit.”

His eyes narrowed as he took in her behavior and discomfort. “You know something.”

“No. I don’t know anything, Wit. This is serious and…”

“And what?” He slid to the end of the sofa they were sitting on and looked her dead in the eye. “You know more than you’re letting on, don’t you?”

“No. I don’t. That’s the problem. We’re here until we find a way home without any obstacles,” she admitted. “So we need to identify any potential risks along the way.”

“And by obstacles, you mean…?”
