“Why’s that?” she asked.

“’Cause someone is sure to take it upon themselves to feed Duchess for me, and they’re gonna walk right in on Duke. He’s a bit territorial. Like a feisty little half pound chihuahua… but a squirrel.”

Ayelish paused, and her expression grew serious. “Oh, I hope it’s Killion. I really hope it’s my brother. He’s going to—”

“Read every book on wild squirrels and become the resident expert on it?” Wit interrupted with a chuckle. “I was kinda hopin’ the same thing. That dude is so literal. An outside animal livin’ on the inside will get his goat for sure.”

The two sat and laughed, enjoying their time together like they didn’t have a care in the world. Wit quickly remembered, it seemed, as he stood and went to a window wearing a stone-faced expression, and looked outside before taking his seat again on the floor in front of the fire across from Ayelish.

“Yeah,” he said quietly like his thoughts were everywhere but in that space. “I think this is the kinda place I’d want for you… and our babies, Aye.”

“You sure we’re having babies?” she teased. “I haven’t even decided if I like you much.”

“Oh, you like me, darlin’. As I recall, you can’t get enough of me. I’ve ruined all other men for you.” He chuckled. “They’d never match up to my kinda lovin’. The kind you’re cravin’ right now.”

“You’re okay,” she said with a flirty shrug. “It’s a maybe.”

Wit’s eyes lit up. “I told you so, didn’t I? I said you were the love of my life and I was gonna marry you the very first time I laid eyes on you.”

“You sure did,” she said, scooting closer. “I really wanted to push you out a window back then.”

“Poured a pan of piss on me instead, I recollect.”

“I wasn’t a fan of your cowboy charm,” she said, wrapping her legs around his waist in an intimate way.

Wit kissed her collarbone. “And now?”

“And now…” She paused, giving in to his touch. “Ehh, you’re all right.”

He swatted her ass and laughed when she jumped. “Just all right, huh?”

Wit first met Ayelish on a case years ago when they found Daily, Ronan’s wife, in a hospital after she’d been attacked and brought to the edge of life and death. Ayelish was a rogue operative then and acted as Daily’s caretaker until her cousins arrived to take over and get to the bottom of the case. Wit foiled Ayelish’s plan to disappear before anyone could get there and maintain her cover when he showed up unexpectedly.

It was like love at first sight for him, and when he expressed such, Ayelish tossed the contents of the bedpan she was emptying on him as a distraction to get away. And get away she did, but he held a torch for his redheaded angel all along.

She shrugged. “You did tell me that your mama said you were an acquired taste. Guess she was right because you’ve definitely grown on me.”

Wit pulled away from her, causing her brow to furrow in confusion.

“Wit?”

He smiled sweetly and ran his finger down her face, then tucked her hair behind her ear. “I, uh… was welcoming the distraction here, but somethin’ you just said reminded me what I came out here to talk about.”

Ayelish shifted back so she wasn’t on his lap and gave him space. “Okay. I’m sorry I distracted you.”

“Don’t ever apologize, baby. You’re the distraction I always look for and will never get tired of,” he said. “And that’s the problem.”

“I don’t understand, Wit.”

“I said I ruined all men for you, but it’s really the other way around. I’m pretty sure everything is about to change between us,” he admitted.

“I still don’t…”

“I was thinkin’… in the shower…” He continued. “I started to tell ya when I walked in here but thought better of it. It would be easier to just…leave things be.”

Her tone dropped to a near whisper. “Tell me what, Wit?”

“You think…”
