“Just a brick building,” Relay said as it filled the wall. “No signage or anything.”

“I have the title here.” Killion nodded his head to the same wall as data filled the space next to the image of the brick building. “This is legit. It’ll take a little time to unbury all the financial layers, though. That building is deeded to trust buried under a number of shell companies and offshore holdings within those shell corps.”

“Which means?” Hen asked.

“Which means you two just inherited that building and everything attached to it.” Carter slid a key to each of the men. “Not sure what it is, but it’s yours, and it must be big. I think it’s fair to say that the two families you’re accused of killing are affiliated with whoever has been protecting you from afar and feeding us intel.”

“You realize what you’re sayin’?” Wit asked.

“I do. Your foster families weren’t by coincidence,” Carter added.

“Then this… All of this…” Hen stood and stared at the screen and then the documents in front of him as he rolled the key between his fingers. “It all started… years ago. Decades in the making.”

“What’s in that fuckin’ buildin’?” Wit took to his feet and moved closer to the screen and analyzed the information displayed. “How long you gonna need to unbury all that shit, Killion?”

“There’s no telling,” he replied. “We’re already up against layers of encryption and firewalls, and that’s just the beginning. I think we’ll have better luck writing a program that can dismantle all of this. It will be faster than we can manually do it.”

“What if I get you two more coffee?” Wit scratched his chin and continued to stare at his inheritance.

“Coffee is the last thing those two need,” Cane interceded. “Ponderosa Peak is an easy drive over the pass. We’ll get there, boots on the ground, long before they’ll get this thing peeled back with or without coffee.”

Killion looked up from his screen. “He’s right. This is delicate shit, and I can already tell it wasn’t set up by an amateur. One wrong move and we can set off all sorts of alarms and risk never knowing what’s behind that trust and building.”

“Road trip?” Hen said, shoving his key into his pocket.

“We can get a chopper up in the hour and be there before the sun goes down,” Rip suggested. “Your call.”

“Nah.” Wit took a seat on the edge of the table next to his brother and kept his eye on the brick building. “Chopper might draw unwanted attention, and we don’t know the terrain out there well enough to park it out a few miles and hike in. “We’re drivin’. Tonight, so we can hide in the shadows just in case.”

“Bounty hunters,” Ayelish said. “We have to assume they’re already here and everywhere else, including Ponderosa Peak.”

“If nothin’ else, a dark-colored convoy out of town is sure to alert them to follow,” Wit agreed. “We’ll have a tail or two for sure.”

“Well, I ain’t ridin’ all the way to the Peak in that fuckin’ Prius,” Wit warned, and the group laughed. “I’m serious.”

“I got this,” Killion said. “I’m dispatching advance teams as we speak. Let them get the lay of the land and secure the area. I’ll get the rest ready for you.”

“I’ll help.” Relay smiled at Killion. “Why don’t you all go take a beat, and we’ll have everything ready for sundown.”

“You don’t need to ask me twice.” Wit headed for the door as the rest of the teams filed out.

“Go be with your families, have dinner, whatever you need to do,” Coy said. “Prepare a go-bag. We don’t know what we’re walking in on. I’ll stay here and help Killion and Relay.”

“What about you, brother?” Wit asked Coy. “You’re goin’, ain’t ya? I need my right-hand there with me.”

“Yeah.” Coy smiled. “I’ve got your back, man.”

“Gotta get your go-bag then,” Wit added.

“It’s always ready. I’m good. Meet you downstairs in a few hours.” Coy nodded, then turned his attention back to Killion and Relay.

Ayelish and Ashlyn walked arm in arm behind their significant others, grinning.

“How did we not see it before?” Ashlyn asked as both men scratched the side of their head at the same time and in the same manner.

“They’re definitely brothers.” Ayelish giggled. “How they walk, how they talk, and how they scratch their heads.”

The group reached the elevator, and Wit hit the button to call it to their floor. “Hey, y’all want to come back with us and have some soup? Made a fresh batch this mornin’ that should be good and ready by now. It’s better after it has time in the fridge to mingle.”
