Rainy began to pack up their spread of food, tossing it haphazardly into the basket. “What happened?”

They were under so much pressure, had so much threat looming, it didn’t take much for either of them to sense that danger was headed straight for them yet again.

“Get to the Lair,” Ashlyn said, scooping up Jolie and fastening her in the stroller before going for Meyer. “We’ll take care of the babies and finish up here.”

“They’re fussy. It’s nap…”

Ayelish laid a hand on Rainy’s shoulder, offering comfort. “We got it. We’ll get them down and stay with them.”

Killion reached for Rainy’s hand and helped her to her feet and steadied her. “You good?”

Rainy nodded, linking her arm with his, and looked back and forth between his twin sisters' tearful stares. “Who? Who’s hurt?”

Ashlyn bit her bottom lip and turned to Ayelish, who finally spoke as a tear streamed down her face. “It’s Finn.”

“Shit.” Killion’s head dropped. “No, no, no…”

“The team is gathering in the Lair waiting for you. They’ll fill you in on details,” Ashlyn said. “We’ll stay with the twins as long as needed.”

Killion and Rainy moved toward the elevator, but her leg slowed her down, and Killion saw the strain on her face. He scooped her up. “Hold on, darlin’. I’ll give you a ride to the elevator.”

“This is so embarrassing.” Rainy covered her eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. I kind of like this better,” he said, putting her mind at ease. “I’d carry you anywhere.”

Rainy was speechless, and he liked it that way –– felt like he was doing something right by sweeping her off her feet like he did. The elevator ride several floors up felt never-ending. That was how time worked when the stakes were high and anxieties higher matched with fear that something had gone terribly wrong and you were the responsible party.

“It’s going to be okay,” Rainy said, seeming to sense Killion’s agitation. “No matter what it is, it’ll be okay.”

He put her down as they approached the desired floor that led to the Lair. “I hope you’re right. I can’t have another thing go wrong because of me.”

“I know this is hard for you to wrap your mind around, but you have to know that no matter what is happening, it isn’t your fault. You’re the victim here, not the villain.”

“No.” He looked at her, eyes full of anger. “Finn is the victim. Or so we’re told. Just don’t know what he’s a victim of yet, but I can guess this links back to me.”

The elevator came to a stop and let them out, and Killion reached for her, but she put her hand up. “It’s not far –– a handful of steps at most. I’ll walk. I can be quick.”

“I’m not worried about quick. I don’t want you to hurt,” he warned.

“I’ll be fine. I promise.”

Killion extended his elbow and walked at a slower pace than he likely would have otherwise, but it ensured Rainy would be at his side when he received whatever news was about to further shatter their imploding world.

“They found you, good,” Wit said, greeting Killion at the door, Cane hot on his heels.

Killion nodded, acknowledging them. “What’s going on? All the girls said was that it was Finn. Something happened?”

“He was in an accident.” Cane seemed shaken. “We have boots on the ground assessing the situation now. Sounds like he’s pretty banged up but could be worse.”

“He’s going to be okay, then?” Rainy asked.

“Sounds like it. We’ll get him back here and assessed in the medical ward,” Cane shared. “Chopper’s about to land and pick him up.”

“Chopper? Where is he?” Killion questioned.

“He’s out in wine country, about twenty miles out of town,” Wit shared. “With the wedding being postponed, all the senior O’Reilly clan who came in for it needed something to do. Magnus and Colleen took them all out there to tour the local wineries.”

“My parents are out there?” Killion sounded alarmed.
