Margot pressed her fingers to her cheeks. “I’m not sure. Beau never told me. He only said it was tens of thousands of dollars.”

“When was this?”

Thankfully, Margot didn’t waste too many precious seconds trying to remember. “Early October, I think.”

“Did you believe him? About the money? Where it came from and what it was intended for?”

The timer beeped, echoing in the tiled bathroom.

Margot jumped slightly. She watched as Josie dismissed the alarm.

Josie looked back at her to see if she’d answer the final question. She turned around to face Josie. “I used to, but now I’m not so sure.”

THIRTY

Noah was still lingering in the doorway of Raffy’s office when Josie emerged from the bathroom. She’d left Margot inside to compose herself, although she was certain that Margot had no intention of coming out until Josie and Noah had left. As she got closer to the office, Raffy’s voice carried into the hallway. “…just not a believer in all this relationship stuff. I mean, it’s cool, and I know a lot of people get something out of it, but I tried it on my ex and it did not work at all.”

“Playing games as a way to foster intimacy didn’t work?” Noah said.

Raffy laughed. “No way, man. All it did was make us realize we wanted different things, and once that happened, it was over.”

“When was this?” Noah asked.

“I don’t know,” Raffy said. “A few years ago. But we always kept in touch. It didn’t end on bad terms, it just ended. Look at this, man. Six calls from her in the last half hour. She gets drunk every now and then and pulls this shit and then in the morning, she doesn’t even remember.”

“You think you’ll ever get back together?”

A sigh. “I don’t know, man. Maybe.”

“You ever think about asking Beau Collins for relationship advice? One on one? Or Claudia?”

Raffy’s laughter was louder this time. “You’re kidding me, right? No way. I like this job and I want to keep it, but between me and you, they’re a joke. They’re getting trolled for a reason, man. Think about it. Why would a former patient say those things that Abbott said? There’s something there. No way am I taking relationship advice from people whose patients think they should be tortured.”

“Margot seems to take her job pretty seriously. Does she know how you feel about them?”

A chuckle. “Oh, man. Listen, Margot and I are a thing, but it’s not serious. I don’t really care what she thinks. It’s never going to go anywhere with her.”

Noah said, “Beau Collins seems worried that it might be.”

A long exhale. “I bet he does. That dude is something else.”

“What do you mean?”

Raffy lowered his voice and Josie tiptoed closer to the door to hear him. “There’s no way he’s not banging everything that moves when his wife isn’t looking. Margot told me about Eve. I’m not surprised at all. She never said but he was probably banging her, too.”

“Margot?” said Noah.

“Hell, yeah. All the time those two spend together. The way they talk to one another. They had to. I’m not about to go the distance with that dude’s scraps.”

Josie had had enough. She walked up behind Noah. “You ready?”

Raffy startled at the sight of her. “Oh hey, you talk to Margot?”

“Yes,” Josie said.

She didn’t bother with saying goodbye, instead striding away with Noah in tow. Once they were outside, she said, “The best thing that will ever happen to Margot will be breaking up with that douche.”

“Agreed,” Noah said.
