It closed behind us, and I looked around. The place was clean, and smelled like lemony sanitizing spray. It wasn’t huge, but it looked really nice.

If I ever wanted to live in the forest, I’d definitely do it this way.

Then again, I hoped toneverlive in the forest.

All that dirt, constantly in your hair…

Hard pass.

I plopped down on the big swivel chair near a set of large windows that were covered by blinds.

Wolf-Kai sat on the floor in front of me, leaving space between us.

The wolf definitely wasn’t all lovey. He wasn’t trying to rub against me constantly, or asking me to pet him or anything.

He actually seemed kind of standoffish, honestly. Not that I blamed him, considering what had happened with his first mate.

“So I need to eat,” I told him. “It’ll take a few days for your blood to work the fever out of my system. The mate fever—it’s the first part of the vampire mating process. If you can’t shift back right now, I’m going to have to drink Morgan’s blood. I don’t know if it will make me sick or not, but if you can’t shift, that’s inevitable.”

The wolf studied me.

He was always doing that, and it was kind of frustrating.

What was he seeing?

Did he like it?

Did he likeme?

I hated the wondering.

My eyes closed.

I felt paws on my thighs, then—and before I could jerk my eyes open, careful teeth were cutting into my throat.

I remained still, not daring to move.

The bite wasn’t painful.

My body started going numb immediately, though.

When I realized what was happening—that I was shifting, becoming a wolf too—horror clutched my abdomen.

I should’ve known it was a possibility—the hybrid thing.

Morgan had become one; why wouldn’t I?

But I hadn’t thought about it before, so it scared the shit out of me.

I waited to feel different, as my body morphed and I ended up on four paws on the ground.

Glancing down at myself, I noticed that I had black fur, just like Morgan did in her wolf form. Was that a hybrid thing?

When I lifted my head, my eyes collided with man-Kai’s.

Shit, that man was gorgeous.

His expression was both dark and unreadable as he asked, “Do you have a wolf in this form? Morgan doesn’t,” he said.
