Just my damn imagination.

The world spun as I retched one last time, and though I heard myself hit the floor, I passed out before I could feel any pain from the collision.

I guessI was wrong about dying in that exact moment, because I started coming to a few minutes later. I was too weak to move, or open my eyes, but I could feel someone leaning over the top of me.

And shit, that smell?

It was delicious.

Manly, too, like rain and pine trees.

Maybe my front doorhadopened.

“Why is there a vampire in my townhouse?” the man growled. He must’ve been talking on the phone, because I couldn’t hear or smell anyone else.

Ohh.

This must’ve been the hot, jaded, inked-up werewolf who owned the place I was staying in.

All I really knew about him was that his name was Kai, he was always grumpy, and he had an adorable little son named Lucas.

And that apparently hedidn’tknow that his friend had offered to let me stay here. I’d been here for months without him stopping by though, so it wasn’t like I’d put him out or anything.

I tried to open my eyes, or my mouth. To show him I was awake, or explain why I was in his townhouse. But every ounce of blood in my body had been dispelled, and I was too weak to do anything.

“No, he fuckingdid not.” The werewolf must’ve moved or something, because shit, his scent made my mouth water. There was a pause before he added, “Is it normal for her to vomit blood and pass out?”

He was so growly. And that voice… clearly, I was delirious, because just the sound of his voice was making me hungry for his blood.

And I hadn’t wanted to drink someone’s blood since the fever set in. I had to do it, to stay alive, but just the thought of drinking from someone had made me nauseous for nearly a year and a half.

Until today, I supposed.

Then again, I couldn’t move. So it wasn’t like I could grab him and take a drink or anything.

“Okay,” the growly werewolf guy said. “What do I do?” There was a pause, and then he practically snarled into the phone. “No. I’ll feed the vampire.”

Wait, what?

I mean, he smelled good. But the only people in town who had actually volunteered to feed me were the single werewolf men who hoped I might end up as their mate. I didn’t even know if it was possible for a vampire to be mated to a werewolf, and he’d already met his mate, so I had no idea why he was offering to feed me.

“Keep the unmated bastards away,” he practically roared.

I heard a cracking noise that told me the screen on his phone had probably just been broken.

A pair of large, gentle fingers brushed something off my face. Hair, probably. If I’d been able to move, I would’ve cringed, because I was extremely sweaty and my hair was soaked. The actual fever that came with the mate fever was no joke.

My heart nearly jumped out of my throat when a thick wrist met my lips.

He was offering me his arm. His blood.

He was really going to feed me.

I was going to die if I didn’t get some blood, but honestly, Iwantedto taste his.

But, try as I might, I couldn’t get my mouth to open. My fangs were already descended—those jerks didn’t ever shrink completely into a human shape, like books and movies claimed. They only grew and descended when I needed them to pierce skin—but I couldn’t part my lips.

A long moment passed.
