I gave him a sleepy smirk. “That’s what makes it funny.”

He lifted the fabric to his nose, and inhaled deeply. His expression smoothed, and I frowned a bit. “Why are you smelling me?”

He tapped his neck, ignoring my question. “Have at it.”

I scowled at him.

He leveled me with a look.

My scowl deepened. “I already know you think I smell bad; your wolf made that pretty damn clear. Stop sniffing me.”

His forehead wrinkled like that was atrocious. “That’s a joke, right?”

“No.”

He grabbed my knee and dragged it over the erection he was apparently hiding in those jeans, physical evidence that he wasn’t turned off by my scent. “I don’t think you smell bad. Why would you believe that?”

“Your wolf made me change my underwear.”

He snorted. “Not because you smelledbad. Because your panties weresoaked. Any amount of movement in those damn things would’ve broadcasted that scent to every wolf around you in that tiny dress.”

My forehead wrinkled.

That… actually did make sense.

“Your shirt is huge. I worried it belonged to another man, so I sniffed it to make sure it didn’t. Don’t overthink it.” He dragged the fabric back to his nostrils and inhaled deeply. His erection throbbed against my knee, and my body heated.

No, he definitely didn’t find my scent repulsive.

“You could’ve justasked.”

“We don’t have that level of trust right now,” he said bluntly.

That hurt a little.

We didn’t know each other, but I’d never done anything that should make him doubt me or my loyalty. If either of us was untrustworthy, it was him. He was the one who didn’t want us to be connected in any way after the fever abated.

“I’m taking Lucas to my mom’s place today; he spends most Saturdays with her while I’m with clients. I’ll stop by again after I drop him off, around eight, and then just before I pick him up, around five.”

That would give me a good portion of the day to walk around looking for job openings. I’d been a professional dancer back in Mist Valley, before I got sick. I knew it was only a temporary thing, and would only last until the fever hit, but I’d always enjoyed it.

I was hoping there was something related to that in town, like a dance studio or gymnastics place. It had been eighteen months since I did anything dance or gym related, but given that I had super speed and was stronger than most people, I was pretty sure that it would come back quickly. Mystical instincts were helpful too.

“Okay. Thanks.”

I wanted to ask him what he did for work, but also didn’t.

The more we talked, the more I’d like the bastard.

“Mmhm.” He slid a hand over my bare thigh, and pulled me closer to the edge of the countertop. “Do you want to meet up for lunch, too? I’ve only got half an hour between clients, but I can bring food. We’d have time.”

I mean, Ididn’twant to meet up for lunch. I did, because he tasted incredible and made me feel so good, but I didn’t want to keep bonding with him and liking him when he’d made it so extremely clear that we were going to be done in a few days.

Then again, I had to drink from him.

The longer I dragged out the fever-recovery, the longer I would have to fall for him.

Which I couldnotlet happen.
