I snorted, and then she did too.

“In wolf form,” she clarified.

“No.”

“So you still have to deal with the fever, craze, chase, and climax?” She whistled. “Quite the dramatic process for you two.”

“I hate you,” I said with a sigh.

She only laughed.

Her laughter faded, though, and I knew she wasn’t joking around anymore when she said, “What if he really doesn’t want more, Iris? How are you going to keep dealing with the fever?”

“I don’t know,” I whispered. “People don’t mess around with the fever. You know that even if vampires don’t want to be together, they complete the bond before parting ways. It’s too hard on their bodies not to.”

Another pause followed.

“I think we’d be trapped in a hellish cycle,” I finally told her. “Or at least,Iwould be. We’d treat the fever, and then over the course of a few months, all of the symptoms would return. Everything will make me sick again. I need to make friends with a few wolves in town who wouldn’t mind feeding me frequently, because I have to eat extra while in the fever. Ethan and I are sort of friends, but I can’t constantly ask him to feed me.”

“I know.” Morgan sighed. “I’ll put a sign-up in the coffee shop.”

A snort escaped me. “If you want me to drain you dry.”

She laughed quietly. “Fine, I won’t. Iwillkeep an eye out, though.”

Axel murmured something to her, and she made a noise of agreement.

“Axel knows a few guys who might be up for it,” she added. “One’s a widower. Two spend a lot of time getting as close to having sex as their wolves will let them. He’s not giving you their names until you and Kai are done treating the fever, though.”

That was fair, I supposed.

“I could go back to Mist Valley,” I said quietly. “I mean, I’d rather die than get trapped there again. But I’m going to find a job here so I can get my own place; if I offer someone a ticket out of there, and a spare bed, anyone in our old position would agree in a heartbeat.”

“You’re not wrong,” Morgan admitted. “It hasn’t been that long with Kai, though. Things could still turn out differently. Don’t abandon the ship yet.”

“They could… but I don’t think they will.”

“Not with that attitude,” she teased me.

My lips curved upward slightly. “It’s just a few days, and then I’ll be on my own again. I’m sure I’ll be fine.”

“I’m sure you will too. Mostly because I know my ass is here to save yours if anything shitty happens again.”

I snorted. “So supportive.”

“Always,” she teased.

Axel murmured something, and I felt bad for waking them up even though Morgan hadn’t sounded sleepy in the slightest.

“I’m going to get ready for the day. Thanks for making me feel better.”

“Any time. I love you, girl.”

“I love you too.”

We hung up, and I realized I’d stopped pacing at some point in the conversation.

That was good; at least I was getting a little calmer.
