But honestly, I didn’t think I’d make it much further than the nearest gas station.

Swallowing roughly, I leaned back against the seat’s headrest.

It was going to be a lot of walking. With super-speed, that wasn’t a huge deal.

But it would make me tired, and when I was tired, I was hungry. Especially while I was still recovering from the fever.

I might need to drink extra blood when I met him for lunch, if I had to walk a few miles to work.

I shut my eyes.

At least I was wearing my old, holey running shoes.

After googling the distance of the house I was meeting Violet at, I let out a relieved breath when I realized it was only five miles away. I still had half an hour until I was supposed to get there, so with super speed, I’d have more than enough time at a power-walk.

I grabbed my keys, locked the door behind me, and then headed out.

I got there a bit early, but I could hear Violet already working inside the house. The door was open, and when I walked in, I let my gaze sweep over the space. It was…

A work in progress.

Everything needed paint. And flooring.

There weren’t any cabinets in the kitchen, or appliances, either.

But the shape of it was really nice, and it had big, gorgeous windows.

Something told me that when it was done, it was going to be a beautiful home. And since it was on the outer edge of town, it had an incredible view of the forest without any neighbors too close.

“Hey,” I called out, since I could hear Violet’s music playing in the other room.

“Hey! Come on in!” Violet called back.

I headed in the direction of her voice, and found her on her hands and knees, putting tile in. Her belly was clearly pregnant, but I’d never been around anyone pregnant enough to know how close to giving birth she might be.

She looked up at me, and her eyebrows shot upward when she saw my dress.

“Before you judge me, I’ve been mostly-bedridden for eighteen months,” I said. “I sold my gym clothes to the other dancers when money got tight after the fever hit, so this is the most construction-like my closet gets right now. I also have no money.”

The last part, I admitted with a grimace.

Her expression cleared. “No worries; we’ve all been there. I’ve got an extra shirt in the car you can borrow; we look about the same height. It’ll be too wide for you, but at least you won’t cut up your arms or anything.”

“Thank you,” I said, gratitude swelling within me.

“Of course.” She flashed me a grin. “If you really have super speed and are willing to put in the time to learn, you could save my ass. I already have a potential buyer for this place, and they want to move in ASAP.”

My eyebrows shot upward. “It doesn’t look almost ready.”

She snorted. “It’s not. Try telling an overprotective werewolf dad that, though. I’m fighting him off with tile and paint-rollers.”

I cracked a grin.

“A lot of the stuff is pretty simple,” she explained to me as we walked toward the front door—and her car, parked in the driveway. “Cutting trim to the right size. Painting. Drilling nails. Putting handles on cabinets. Usually, I don’t totally redo every part of a house, but I saw this place and got a reno-boner. The floor plan is gorgeous—and it was really, really hideous at first. You should’ve seen the wallpaper, and the mold.” She shuddered, and I laughed.

Reaching the car, she opened the passenger door and leaned in, grabbing stuff off the front seat. “I’ll pay you in cash at the end of the day for this first week. It can be part of the trial period, so you’ll have the money to buy some thrift-store clothes to wreck,” Violet called out over her shoulder.

“That would be perfect.”
