“Why haven’t you had a conversation about it?”

“Because I didn’t know how to tell him that I wasn’t going to be with my mate while attempting to teach him that eventually he’d meet a girl whose scent brings him to life and makes him realize why he could never look at any of the other women,” he growled.

Silence filled the space between us.

It was already late—and I needed time to breathe, and think.

Almost all of my clothes except the work ones were still packed.

“I’m not sleeping in your trailer unless Lucas understands who I am and why I’m there,” I said bluntly. “I’m more than willing to get to know him, to try to be a fun, cool aunt or something, but he’s a part of you. So he deserves the truth before I show up there again. And youwillsurvive if I stay here one more night.”

A snarl escaped the man, but he finally bit out, “Fine. We’ll meet at 5 AM, at my studio, so I can feed you.”

Sheesh, that was early.

But beggars couldn’t be choosers, so I tossed out a “fine” of my own.

The door slammed behind Kai a moment later.

And as I groaned, tilting my head back, I had the feeling that things had just gotten worse between us instead of better.

TWELVE

KAI

“So what happened? And why do you have her car?” Finn asked me as I approached the trailer. Ever since I’d taken Iris on my couch, I hadn’t been able to stomach letting any of the other guys inside.

What if they smelled her on my couch?

Wanted her?

Saw her the same way I did?

It was easier not to let them inside than to consider the possibilities.

“Long story,” I grunted.

He raised an eyebrow.

I tried to step past him, but he blocked my path.

A growl escaped me. “I waited too long before trying to feed her. She tried to drink from one of the bastards in town and got sick. We talked, afterward.”

My explanation skipped a few vital moments, but it was close enough.

“About?”

“Fuck off.” I tried to shove him away, but he dodged me, flashing me a savage grin.

“I’m going to accidentally step a foot inside your trailer if I don’t get an explanation…” the bastard practically sang.

I snarled at him. “Fuck. Off.”

He leaned up against the doorway, studying me.

I let out another, quieter, snarl. “She thought I rejected her. My wolf agreed. The bastard threatened to take control from me and drag her back here to interact with Lucas. She calmed him down, and tried to leave. I convinced her to agree to let me feed her every day.”

His expression was grave by the time I finished my shitty explanation. “The wolf is taking her side?”
