“Probably because I don’t. The cuddling is just as good for me as the sex is,” I said with a sigh.

I bit my lip when I realized I’d never admitted that to him before.

“I should’ve realized,” he murmured. “You kept trapping my hands in your bathroom, before you knew who I was.”

“No. I knew who you were; I just wasn’t ready to face the music yet.”

“And you are now?”

“I have been since I opened my eyes,” I said honestly. “You’re the one who’s been running.”

His gaze softened. “I’m done with that. It’s well-past time for me to start chasing you.”

A soft laugh slipped out of me. “I guess we’ll see, huh?”

“You will.” There was absolutely no doubt at all in his voice.

I loved that—and I really, really hoped it was the truth.

FOURTEEN

Violet was ridiculouslyexcited for me when I told her everything that had happened the night before—not mad at all that I was leaving the stinky house. Apparently, she was currently feeding on my life’s drama to keep herself from going insane with her difficult pregnancy.

I stopped at the grocery store and spent way too long on the toy and candy aisles. When I couldn’t pick just one thing, I bought a handful of different treats and small toys, and figured I’d just disperse them over a few days.

Assuming Kai didn’t change his mind again and decide he didn’t really want me.

I was really, really hoping that didn’t happen again, and wishing I had some more control in the situation.

But I didn’t, and that was that.

My heart was beating erratically when I parked in front of my new townhouse and found my car already parked in the driveway. Kai and Lucas had beat me there; I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.

I debated for a few minutes over which toy or treat to bring in before huffing out a little sigh and grabbing the closest thing to my hand.

There was no way to know if he’d like any of it, so there was no point in stressing about it.

Still, I stressed anyway.

Kai had told me that Lucas didn’t like spending time in his human form, so a few of the little toys I’d picked for him were these sensory things. Some had all kinds of weird lumps and bumps, others had multiple spinning pieces, and some were squishy. I thought maybe it might encourage him to stay human for a little bit longer, even though I knew I was probably wrong.

Kai had basically said the place belonged to me, but I still knocked when I reached the door.

A pair of excited little eyes met mine when it flew open less than three seconds after I’d finished knocking. Lucas’s face was a little red, but he was smiling—a huge improvement from the last time we’d been on his pack’s land, and everyone had ignored me.

Then again, the last time had definitely caught everyone off-guard. And Lucas had probably been smelling my scent on Kai’s skin, so he likely knew his dad was seeing me without telling him.

“Hi,” he said, his face growing redder.

So damn adorable.

I squatted down in front of him, glad I was wearing pants instead of a flowery dress for once. “Hi. I don’t think we officially met. I’m Iris.” I held out my hand to him, and he put his in it immediately.

“I’m Lucas.”

“I know. Your dad talks about you all the time,” I said with a smile. “He’s been keeping you all to himself, huh?”

He grinned.
