When Kai’s stomach started rumbling, we all headed out to get ice cream.
FIFTEEN
Dinner would come second,Lucas told me, as we all climbed into Kai’s truck. He was taking the driver’s seat, thankfully; I didn’t much enjoy driving that monster of a vehicle around.
I’d grabbed a few changes of clothes, in case we didn’t have time to go furniture shopping the next day. It was Thursday, and I had no idea how late Kai usually worked during the week.
Lucas was chatting to us about his favorite TV show on the way to the ice cream place, and my arm was draped over the center console. Being there, with both Kai and his son, was surreal. I hadn’t really adjusted to it yet, and I knew it would take time to get there, but… I liked it.
Hell, maybe I even loved it.
Kai’s fingers intertwined with mine as we drove and Lucas chatted. He only needed minimal responses to keep going, and since we provided those, the little man just kept talking. It was adorable.
Kai released my fingers when we climbed out of the truck, and a minute later, Lucas was grabbing them himself, slipping his hand into mine with a big smile. I returned his expression, my heart swelling a bit in my chest.
“Mates are forever, right?” he asked me, as we walked toward the building. “You’re not going to leave?”
“Mates are forever,” I agreed. “Your daddy’s going to be stuck with me for the rest of our lives—and you are too.”
He beamed, and I swear, I could’ve melted.
Kai captured my other hand, parting my fingers with his and gripping me steadily as we walked in. Inside, there was only a young couple and a middle-aged one with a teenager, and all of them looked at us when we walked in.
Kai ignored them, but I looked right back until they stopped staring.
His chuckle was barely audible as he tugged me closer and then released my hand so he could wrap his arm around my waist.
Lucas tried a few of the flavors, but couldn’t decide what he wanted. He kept looking up at me and Kai, and then back at the flavors, until he finally, came over and tugged on my hand.
I leaned down when he gestured for me to, and my lips curved upward when he whispered, “Can you get bubblegum flavor, and I can eat it for you? Dad might forget that you’re a vampire.”
A laugh nearly escaped me, but I forced myself to nod solemnly. He grinned, and then told the teenager behind the counter that he wanted three scoops of chocolate.
Kai barely kept a straight face as I ordered two scoops of bubblegum, and then gave Lucas a quick wink.
He ordered strawberry for himself, and we all went and sat down in a booth. Me and Kai took one bench, snuggling up with his arm over my shoulder and our sides pressed together comfortably.
“Feeling a little hungry, Spitfire?” Kai teased me, tugging lightly on a strand of my hair.
“I’ve always wanted to try ice cream,” I said with a shrug, and then winked at Lucas again.
He burst out laughing, and leaned over the table. “We tricked you, dad,” he said with a grin. “Iris can’t eat ice cream; it’ll make her sick! She got bubblegum for me, so I can have both.”
“You got me,” Kai said with a shake of his head, and Lucas laughed louder.
Kai brushed his lips against my cheek before he and Lucas went up to grab our cones, and when they came back, the little guy was already devouring the chocolate ice cream.
I was instructed to hold on to mine until he was ready for it, and watched with transfixed amusement as Lucas slayed that ice cream in what had to be record time.
“Werewolf kids probably eat more than most mysts,” Kai told me, noticing my shock. “They’re known to eat their parents out of house and home. He’ll still eat plenty of dinner.”
“I don’t find that hard to believe,” I said, laughing a little as Lucas gave me another grin and reached for my cone.
I handed it over, and leaned against Kai when his arm draped back over my shoulders.
When the guys were done with their dessert, we stopped to buy dinner, and then drove back to the pack’s land.
I was really hoping that this time, everyone didn’t try so damn hard to ignore me.
