“That’s cute,” she said. “I’m surprised Kai hasn’t talked you into more. He’s covered in ink.”

“He’s reluctant to mark me up.” I rolled my eyes at her. “Apparently if I want a tattoo, it has to be unique.”

She laughed. “I guess I get that.”

“Yeah. It is what it is.” I shrugged. “I’ve got to go, but it was nice meeting you.”

It really wasn’t, but it didn’t hurt to be polite.

Kai was leaning against the doorway between his studio and the back room when I slipped inside, and was watching me thoughtfully.

“Hey. Your fangirl out there seems happy.” I tilted my head toward the parking lot, and he grimaced.

I sniffed the air a little, just to make sure it didn’t smell like sex.

It didn’t.

Not that he could cheat on me—he was a werewolf. His wolf wouldn’t let him even consider that.

Right?

“Some college girl from the town nearby started giving people my name and telling them that I’m hot. I think they only keep coming back because they’re obsessed with me,” he grumbled. “Most of them seem to be living on their parents’ money, and pay whatever I want to charge them, which is the only reason I let them come back. I keep hiking up the prices when my schedule fills too far out, and none of them bat an eyelash.”

I nodded, crossing the room with my bag of food swinging. “You look kind of worried. What’s going on?”

“Nothing. Just missed you.” He caught my hand as I approached him, dragging it up to his mouth and brushing his lips over my knuckles.

“This is not nothing.” I dragged my finger over his mouth, the corners of which were turned down a bit, and he wrapped his lips around it, sucking lightly.

He released my finger a minute later and curled his hand around mine before he asked quietly, “Does my job bother you?”

I blinked.

“It bothered Elle. I know it’s not ideal—but I do make good money, and get to set my own hours.”

“You enjoy the work, right?” I asked.

“I do. Obnoxious college girls aside.”

“Then why would your job bother me?” I stepped closer, so my chest was pressed against his body. “You’re an artist. I was a dancer for a while, so I understand the draw of it. Not everyone gets to make money doing what they love; I’m happy for you, that you get to.”

He dipped his head. “I just worry.”

“I’m not Elle, Kai. I never will be. You and I are making enough money to live the way we want to, and that’s all that matters. Unless you flirt back with the college girls, I don’t even care about them. You don’t flirt back, right? Because if you cheat on me, or sleep with one of them, I will absolutely rip your throat out and raise your child myself.”

He laughed—loud, and deep, and rumbly. “I’ve never flirted back. Not once. And my wolf might be laid back, but he’d sooner take control permanently than let me screw a woman who’s not my mate.” Kai’s hands slid down to my waist and dragged me closer to him. “I was done with women entirely up until I walked into that bathroom and found you passed out on the floor. And if I ever so much as consider cheating on you, I’ll deserve a lot more pain than just having my throat ripped out. Make sure you drag it out and throw some torture in.”

I snorted. “I’ll keep it in mind. Write it down somewhere, maybe.”

“Good.” He brushed a kiss to my nose. “I never realized how badly I wanted to taste you until this morning.”

“Youhavetasted me.”

He chuckled. “Not here.” His hand brushed between my thighs. “Here.” He lifted a finger to my lips, and I parted them so he could slide it inside. When he pulled it back out and sucked lightly, he remarked, “You smell like my parents.”

“Well Lucas dragged me right into the belly of the beast. I didn’t know if I’d survive it. So many hugs.” I gave him a fake shiver, and his lips curved upward wickedly.

“You liked it, didn’t you?”
