An hour later,me and Kai were curled up in bed together, back in his trailer. He was wearing nothing but a pair of basketball shorts, and I just had on one of my sleep shirts. He’d told me about the tattoos he did that day—and I told him how much fun I’d had with Lucas.

“I emailed the main alpha yesterday,” he admitted to me.

My eyebrows lifted. “What did he say?”

“He didn’t answer until today. I saw the email right before I found you guys. He’s got someone looking into it right now, and they’ll have Lucas in a new pack by Monday.”

My eyebrows shot upward. “That’s awesome.”

“Thank you for suggesting it. If he could make friends in his pack… it could change school for him, completely.”

“I’ll go with him when he meets them. If anyone doesn’t want to be his friend, I’ll just flash my fangs at them, to scare them into submission.”

He gave me a soft, rumbly laugh. “I’m counting on it.”

There was a moment of comfortable silence before I spoke again. “I have to tell you something,” I admitted.

He waited, silently.

“I got a job teaching an adult dance class at one of the places in town. I didn’t want to tell you, when we were talking about me being a dancer—I guess I just wanted it to be my secret.”

“We hadn’t talked much, then,” Kai murmured.

“I guess not. Anyway, it’s just three classes a week, early in the morning on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Just for fun. I think I’d do it even if they weren’t paying me. I like working with Violet, you know? But I love dancing. My last training class is tomorrow morning, so I figured you probably deserved to know. Not like I was going to make up an excuse or anything.”

“We’ll just head out for the furniture after your class. No problem at all. I’m glad you’re doing what you love, Spitfire.”

“Me too.”

He pulled me closer, kissing my forehead.

“I’m thinking we give it two or three weeks after moving into the townhouse, so Lucas doesn’t forget that he likes me when I steal you away for a few days,” I told him, my voice soft. “But I’m ready to make you mine, in every way.”

“That makes two of us.” He brushed his lips against my forehead. “I’ll put it on the schedule and make sure my mom can take Lucas.”

“I should probably get on birth control or something…” I bit my lip.

Kai went still. “Shit.”

“Yeah. I was thinking about that, after ourlunch. I could be pregnant. Maybe not yet, but soon.”

He let out a slow breath. “It’s unlikely. Most werewolves have a hard time getting pregnant.”

“Most vampires don’t, though. And you have a history of knocking someone up on the first try, so you might have super-sperm or something.”

He didn’t laugh at my joke, but then again, I didn’t really expect him to. I was just making jokes to help myself handle the uncertainty I was feeling.

Kai asked, “What if you are?”

I shrugged. “It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for me. Lucas is great, and I already know you’re the best dad ever.”

He gave me a rumbly chuckle. “That’s exaggerating a lot.”

“It’s not, actually.” I leaned up and pressed my lips to his cheek. “What would you think, if I was?”

“I’d think,” he said slowly, “That Lucas would love having a little brother. Or sister, I guess. I never thought about having a daughter—werewolves usually can’t. There’s only one little werewolf-born girl in town, and she has witch blood. And I’d think that even though I’m just an okay dad on my best day, I’d be insanely excited to do it again. With you.”

“She might be a vampire,” I warned him. “Or he might, if it’s a boy.”
