Remmo said nothing as I waded through the snow, headed toward the lake. If it had been any further, I’d have shifted to my basilisk form just to make it easier.

But I reached the shore soon enough, and found the man still beside me. Apparently he had followed me.

“I think I need to do this alone,” I told him.

“When I know you’re safe in the lake, I’ll give you space.”

It wasn’t much of an agreement, but I nodded anyway. It was kind of sweet that he was going to protect me… even if I was a little worried about the connection he might be feeling between us.

It wasn’t like I could fall in love with the guy. And as far as protection, I didn’t know how much of it mating with him would provide. Teris was a part of the Wild Hunt; if someone challenged him, he’d kill them, even if he needed the rest of his brothers to help.

But as far as I knew, Remmo was far from any position of leadership. He’d just abandoned the unseelies to become a seelie, a move that I understood, but a move that would probably put him at the bottom of the totem pole.

Unease rolled through me.

Had I accidentally created another Clevv? Another man who would do anything and hurt anyone to get back the woman he wanted as his mate?

If so, he had me exactly where he wanted me.

Far from my friends, far from all the other fae who might consider protecting me…

Shit.

I’d never been great at making wise decisions, but this one might take the worst-choices cake.

At least Remmo smelled good, I supposed.

And kissed really well.

Even if he hid me away in the forest forever, I’d probably enjoy it. That was good to know.

He watched silently as I stepped closer to the water.

“Do you think I need to take my clothes off to heal better?” I asked him, nervous about getting any closer.

“Definitely.”

He answered too quickly, and when I glanced over, saw his eyes gleaming.

A laugh escaped me.

He just wanted me naked.

“A man after my own heart.”

Logically, clothes wouldn’t matter. But… I’d never taken the stretchy fabric swimming before.

“Does this fabric dry fast?” I asked him.

“If you have fire.”

Which neither of us did.

“I’ll warm you, if you wish to leave the clothes on,” he assured me.

Letting him warm me up probably wouldn’t be a hardship for him. At least, not formostof him.

Still, I figured it was probably the best idea just to take the damn things off. So I walked over to him, tugging my tank top over my head. He seemed to stop breathing as I put it against his chest, his hand rising stiffly to catch the fabric.
