It brought him way too much joy to see me using my magic. I’d explained to him two weeks earlier that many popular young adult novels featured powerful chicks who ended up losing their magic at the end. It had always bothered me that they came out weaker than the strong guys they were in love with.

Remmo had been hell-bent on proving that things would work out the opposite way for us since then.

And honestly, I was slightly obsessed with the fact that he didn’t just want me tobe withhim. He wanted me to bepowerful, andcapable.

“Alright. No staring at my ass,” I warned him.

He flashed me a vicious grin. “Good luck enforcing that one.”

I rolled my eyes at him, but couldn’t fight my own grin.

After a quick push of power, the glowing fish-things were forming a line, leading us out.

Remmo followed closely behind me as we swam through cave after cave, weaving our way back out of the sacred place.

When we emerged, the sun was shining overhead. I shielded my eyes, groaning at how bright it was after so much time in the dim cave.

Remmo chuckled. “There’s a fish just under your foot.”

I jerked my feet up with a shriek, and earned a booming laugh for it.

“Damn you,” I grumbled at him, peering down into the water.

He was right though; there were not-fish everywhere. They were actually called novocannes, but he found the word “fish” to be kind of hilarious, so he’d taken to calling them that, even though they were clearly not fish.

“Come on, Iloli.” He hooked his fingers in the waistband of my skirt and towed me toward dry land.

“The dirt is going to feel weird after so much time on the stone,” I remarked, letting him lift me out of the pond.

I could’ve done it myself, but there was something really damn appealing about letting him take care of me that way.

“The trees, too,” he agreed, setting me on my feet. I didn’t bother adjusting my skirt; that bitch was always riding up my ass. It would get some serious modifications when we were back at the Stronghold. “Ready?”

“So ready,” I drawled.

His lips quirked upward.

I set my hands on his shoulders when he started to turn away, and he halted.

“Thank you,” I said.

His eyes met mine.

“Seriously, Remmo. Thank you. These have been the best weeks of my life, and I say that with zero sarcasm for once.”

His lips curved upward further. “They’ve been the best weeks of mine, as well.” His hands lifted to cup my face. “You are brilliant, and funny, and beautiful in every way there is. Thank you for letting me come with you.”

I rolled my eyes, though I was biting my lip to fight the grin pulling at my lips. “Now you’re just being cheesy.”

He chuckled. “Sometimes the truth is cheesy.”

And then he pulled me into a hug.

My arms wrapped around his back, and I squeezed him fiercely.

Everything was going to change when we made it back to the Stronghold. I think we both knew that, as much as we didn’t want to admit it. I would be back with my friends, and Teris would be there. And…

I had no idea what was going to happen, honestly.
