“Why does it matter if the snow melts?” I asked.

“The klynnas will escape.” Korrik’s voice was harsh.

“What the hell is a klynna?” The strange word was pronounced clin-uh, and I had never heard it before.

“Wild beasts that are large enough and strong enough to kill fae,” Remmo admitted. “The monsters I told you about, who are trapped on our land. The only time the unseelie and seelie worked together was to imprison them. Vevol gave Aev his ice magic as a way to trap them, because they were massacring us. It takes dozens of fae working together to down a klynna, and the damn things come back to life a few days after you kill them unless you tear them to shreds and separate the pieces. Even then, over time they will resurrect.”

Holy shit.

Someone should’ve included that in the nonexistentWelcome to Vevolguidebook.

“So we have to figure out a way to chill Aev out before you guys can become unseelie leaders,” I said. “To keep the snow around.”

Korrik grumbled, “The only way to stabilize the king is through his female, and I doubt she will return to him.”

“She’s not going back,” I agreed. “The female fae know how to break her bond with him. Apparently it’s pretty complex, but it sounds like a sure thing.”

The men’s faces became grave.

Korrik said, “Then we’ll need to prepare him, so he can maintain his hold on the ice. Did she tell you when it’s going to happen?”

“No. But you can’t tell him—he might try to stop her.”

“Aev doesn’t wish to be mated to Naomi any more than she wishes to be mated to him, Iloli.” Remmo’s voice was careful, but his grip on me remained firm.

Korrik just grumbled, “He sure as hell won’t force her to stay bonded to him. I’ll get the other generals together and figure out a way to prepare Aev for what’s coming. If he can maintain his hold on the ice, then I’ll be back to convince you to lead.” He gave Remmo one last glance.

“You know my answer,” the basilisk said simply.

Korrik heaved a sigh, and walked away.

Leaving me still pressed against Remmo’s chest.

I peeled myself off of the man. He looked down at me and then tugged me right back, asking in a low voice, “What are you wearing, Iloli?”

“A female fae outfit.” I tugged at the skirt part of the dress, which flowed nicely thanks to the slit up the middle. “Cute, huh?”

“Those are extremely small underwear.”

“Nice observation skills. Gold star.” I patted him on the chest. “Now, let go of me.”

He pulled me closer. “I’ll find you shorts to go under it.”

“The shorts don’t shift well. Always getting caught on things. And you saw how well my skirt worked, so thanks, but no thanks.” I tried to ease away again, and he pulled me even tighter.

“Stop trying to get away from me. We need to talk.”

I nodded. “Preferably not while any female fae who wanted to watch could see us.”

He glanced over toward the Stronghold. “I have a den a short distance from here. I haven’t visited in a while, but I’m sure it’s still standing. There’s no kitchen, though.”

“I miss fresh fruit anyway. Let’s go.”

He still didn’t release me.

I stared up at him, and waited for him to look down at me. When he did, there was a crease on his forehead. Reaching up, I smoothed it out. It came right back, immediately.

“If I let go of you, are you going to try to run from me again?” he asked, voice low and cautious.
