It’s quite late in the day before I finally have the opportunity to talk to Hailey. I walk out of my office, through the deserted front desk area, and down the hallway to her office. Like the first time I was there, she’s hard at work at her desk, but this time around, she immediately acknowledges my presence with widened eyes.

She’s so beautiful, even though her hair is messy, with strands falling across her face. I remember the glorious mane spread across my pillow, and I curse inwardly. I didn’t come here to rehash the amazing night we spent together.

Before I say anything, Hailey stands up, slams her laptop shut, and picks up her purse. With quick steps, she moves around her desk in the other direction, far from me, and I know what she’s about to do.

“Please don’t do that.”

She halts in her tracks a few feet from me and avoids my gaze. “Don’t do what?”

“Run away as if I’m a monster.”

She nods but still avoids looking in my direction. My eyes travel across the navy-blue dress that hugs her body, showing off her curves. Every day her clothes are becoming more and more elegant. The heels she’s wearing aren’t high, but they don’t stop me from thinking about where I’d love her legs to be wrapped around.

I clear my throat loudly as if it would dispel my errant thoughts. “We need to talk.”

“Yes.” Her head bobs. “The project is coming along just fine. I’ve fixed the bugs we discovered and—”

“I want us to talk about what happened between us two nights ago.”

Her face crumbles. “Do we have to?”

“Yes.” I hold her gaze steadily before saying, “We didn’t use protection.”

Her face turns a rosy hue, and she bows her head.

“Hailey?”

“I’m clean. HR made me undergo a thorough medical checkup after I got the job.”

“I know. That’s not what I’m talking about.”

Her face is as red as a tomato now. “I’m on the pill.” Then her head shoots up. “Not because I sleep around and don’t want an accident. I use it to control my errant menstrual cycle.”

Relief flows like water inside me. No pregnancy scare. Great. Now the talk about HR anditnever happening again. But seeing how embarrassed she looks, I’m uncharacteristically tongue-tied.

Silence descends between us for a while. I itch to draw her into my arms and smoothen away the lost little girl look from her eyes.

Her shoulders slump and her eyes become teary. “You don’t have to say the words. I get the message. I’ll clear out my desk.”

I frown as she turns around. “Come again?”

“You’re here to fire me,” she says over her shoulder. “Save your breath.”

“Fire you?”

She whirls around and stares at me as if I’m missing something. “For coming onto you and…” She bites her bottom lip and looks away.

Smiling, I take a step closer to her. “I believe you’re old enough to know we have fiery chemistry, and we simply gave into it. But I’m really to blame because I took advantage of your exhaustion.”

“You didn’t.” She shakes her head in rebuttal. “When you kissed me, I should have slapped you and left the office, but I stayed and allowed you to…”

“To what?” I probe as I take another step to close the distance between us.

She shrugs. “You know.”

“Know what?” I continue advancing until I back her against the desk.

She lowers her inflamed face and mutters something incoherent. The inaudible words remind me of when I was pleasuring her by stroking her clit with my tongue on the sofa. My dick jumps to life instantly. Forgetting why I came into the office, I yank her into my embrace and kiss her. She stiffens in my arms.
