“Clean up. I’ll take you home.”

Crunching the silk panties in my fist, I shake my head. “You don’t have to. I can find my way home.”

“I’m not asking. I’m telling.”

I want to yell at him. Just because we had sex again doesn’t mean he owns me.

“Hailey,” he calls in a soft tone, obviously reading the obstinacy in my eyes. “Please let me take you home. I want to.”

I nod reluctantly. Arguing with him will be a waste of time because I’ve come to know him as a guy who always gets his own way.

“I’ll meet you at the elevators. Say, in ten minutes?”

I nod again. He unlocks the door and walks out of the office in his usual confident and imposing manner.

Stupid! Stupid!I take a seat and slam my hand against my head. How could I have done that again? Am I trying to lose my job? I know having an affair with my boss is a sure way to get me fired. I’d made an ass of myself on the first day I started working here, and ever since, I’ve been trying to prove to everyone that I’m an excellent cybersecurity engineer and not a nitwit who fancies the boss.

If word gets out that I’m sleeping with him, I might as well kiss the job goodbye. Mom and Melissa both depend on me for financial assistance. They never wanted to burden me with money problems, but I’d taken it upon myself to be their financial pillar. What would I tell them after losing the job?Mom, Melissa, I got sacked because HR found out I was fucking my boss.

And where do I hope to go with this secret affair? He’s much older than me, so there would always be talk that I’m a gold digger. A small-town girl dating a much older city billionaire. And what if I ignore all that talk and continue sleeping with him? What then? By the time Gareth tires of having sex with me or when we complete the project and I don’t have to work with him anymore, what then? Would I duck anytime I saw him coming?

Oh, Hailey! What have you done to yourself?

With my face burning, I take my purse, push my panties into it, and leave my office. Luckily, no one is around, and I quickly head for the restroom. I clean up as much as I can before putting on my damp panties. The thought of Gareth sliding in and out of me as I hold on to my desk has me soaked again.

Gareth is already waiting for me by the bank of elevators. He must have wondered if I’d already bolted. We don’t say a word to each other as we ride the elevator to the ground floor, and I follow him to his private parking space. He dismisses his driver and takes the wheel of his sleek black Mercedes. I slide into the cool interior, enjoying the feel of the leather seat. It’s like no car I’ve ever been in. I gawk at the numerous buttons on the dashboard.

Wow. I’m sure it’s customized.

“Yes, it’s customized.”

I blush, not realizing I spoke my thoughts out loud. Why am I surprised? He’s a tech guru.

He chuckles. “Give her your house address.”

“Who?”

He grins, and my heart beats faster at the sexiness of it. He presses one of the buttons, and it’s as if the car virtually comes alive. “Hello, Kim. This is Hailey. We’re taking her home.”

“Hello, Hailey. Where is home?”

Astounded, I tell her. “123 Hope Street, Brooklyn.”

Kim locks in the coordinates on the map that comes up on the dashboard and tells me the arrival time, given the level of traffic. Gareth drives out of the garage into the busy street. I struggle to calm my nerves as he deftly maneuvers the steering wheel and weaves through lanes of heavy traffic.

Although I enjoy watching lanky boys perform hip-hop in subway cars, sitting beside Gareth in his luxurious Mercedes is way better.

“What made you think I’d fire you?” he probes gently, and I grimace at how I reacted when he came into the office. I’d avoided him for two days for fear that he would put the blame for what happened on me. I never thought we’d do it again.

“Susan,” I reply with a squeak.

“Huh?” He glances at me before returning his attention to the road. “What did she tell you?”

“She didn’t have to spell it out in plain words. The insinuation was—mess around with the boss and kiss your job goodbye.”

Gareth chuckles, and I find it heartwarming.

“Then I should have fired myself. I was the one who kissed you first,” he remarks with laughter in his voice.
