I nod and breathe an enormous sigh of relief when I hear a knock on my door. Thankfully, the pizza is here. I place it on the dining table, but Gareth shocks me by taking a napkin and a piece of pizza from the box and sitting on the floor. I stare as he begins to eat, but taking the cue from him, I remove my heels and join him.

While eating and drinking, Gareth asks me about my life, and I tell him about growing up in a small town in Wyoming, living with my mom, who is a middle school teacher, my sister, Melissa, and losing my dad when I was a teen. I tell him about my high school and college boyfriends when he asks.

“I met Ron in college, and we connected. Geek to geek, if you know what I mean. We had many firsts together. He was the only lover I ever had before…” I draw to a stop. Overshare. Keeping my gaze on my water, I shrug and go on. “We drifted apart in our final year when it looked like we wanted different things, and he couldn’t handle the fact that my grades were better than his. After our breakup, I focused all my attention on my studies. I went on some dates, but they didn’t mean anything. So that’s it.”

I glance at him. He’s staring into his can of beer.

“You?”

He frowns. “What?”

“What about you? I’m sure you had girls lining up each morning in school to throw petals at your feet.”

Laughter shakes his broad shoulders. “We’ll talk about me another time. Right now, my interest is in something else.”

My eyes enlarge like saucers because I know what he means. Warmth creeps up to my face. I didn’t use to blush like this in the past, but Gareth isn’t like any man I’ve met.

“What are we doing, Gareth? You’re my boss. I’m only twenty-five. You are almost from another century, even though you don’t look it and—”

“Gee, thanks.” He grins. “Nice to know my hard work to always look young by eating right and keeping fit pays off. Except for this pizza, I guess.”

I shake my head. “I think we should stop whatever this is. I don’t want to lose my job when you tire of me or when the project is over. I love this job.”

He keeps silent for so long that I fear I might have annoyed him. When I lift my head to look at him, he’s staring intensely at me with those enthralling green eyes of his. I almost take back everything I said.

He shrugs and shoots lithely to his feet. “You’re right. We shouldn’t have given in to the attraction. I’ll respect your wishes, and I apologize if I stepped out of line. Believe me, I’m usually not like this. You… you… never mind. See you tomorrow.” He walks over and picks up his clothes. “Thanks for a lovely evening.”

I scramble to my feet and go after him. At the door, he spins around, and I’m only a foot away from him. He catches me off guard, and I stumble back. Speedily, his arms reach out to stop me from falling. With that single act, my knees weaken at his proximity. When he draws me into his arms, it’s only natural for me to throw my arms around his neck and lean in for his kiss.

Even though I just gave him a speech about why we shouldn’t have sex anymore, I don’t protest when he leads me back to the sofa and fucks me until I’m barely able to speak. I also don’t object when he shares the shower with me and thrusts into me with my back against the wall and my legs wrapped around his waist. Sated, we finally fall asleep in my bed, and he leaves in the early morning, but not before taking me once again from behind.

As I prepare for work hours later, I realize there’s no going back on this.

I’m having an affair with my boss, and I want to keep doing it, come what may.

CHAPTER10

GARETH

Secretly observing Hailey as she types away on her laptop along with the rest of my team, I tell myself once again that I must stop having sex with her. For the past two weeks, we’ve been having a secret affair. I hope to keep it that way.

What are you doing, Gareth?

I can’t stop myself. The night we spent together at her place was the beginning. It’s like we gave in to a drug. Whenever our bodies accidentally touch, sparks fly. Working with her is sheer torture. I can’t get thoughts of her from my mind. Everywhere I look, we’ve fucked. Even the chair she’s currently sitting on has been at the receiving end of our passion for each other. The excuse of working late as the deadline for the project draws closer gives us the opportunity to have sex every day.

Susan is back in the office, but I usually send her home with the excuse that she’s still recuperating. My fear that Hailey would go to HR dissipated after I learned more about her. She’s a small-town girl with no agenda. The knowledge that I was her second lover at the age of twenty-five fills me with a strange sort of tenderness.

Thankfully, the interview with Hunter is over. Even though he promised to keep it professional, the talkative journalist delved into personal affairs, bringing our interview to an abrupt end when I asked him to leave. I also schooled Hailey and the rest of the team about keeping things professional with Hunter. I explained to Hailey why she must not give away anything concerning us or herself. She told me Hunter tried to pry information from her. The slimy bastard.

Hailey still has no clue that I have an ex-wife, let alone a daughter. I thought she and the other women in the office talked about me, but it turns out that Hailey abhors gossip and doesn’t read celebrity magazines. She follows a lot of tech magazines, but it’s not like my private life would be splayed out in Wired. I can’t explain why I’ve been holding back from telling her about Linda and Amber. Would it mean letting her into my private world, opening up to her about my failed marriage, and making our affair more than sex? Are those the things I’m wary of?

The memory of her riding me on that chair the previous night has my dick rousing to life. As if she, too, is thinking the same thing, her head rises, and our eyes meet and lock. Her face reddens, and I know she remembers me clasping her breasts tightly as she bounced on me, moaning.

A small commotion outside snaps my gaze from her as Linda, dressed in an elegant black dress, storms into the office. Jackie is hot on her heels.

“Did you tell your secretary to keep me out? Listen, Gareth, I deserve some respect as your wife!”

I don’t bother to turn around to see who let out a gasp. I should have told Hailey that night when she asked me about my life, but I had other things in mind. I can’t begin to imagine how she’s feeling right now.
