Georgina is a hard nut to crack, but I had no idea she was thishard.

“I’m going to have the lawyers proceed with theEnchantédeal,” Theodore says, pulling me out of my thoughts.

“No,” I say quickly. I need to regroup and think things through. I hadn’t expected her to print another horrible article about us today, so my game plan would have to change slightly. But I’m entirely certain this is notthe time to buy her magazine.

Theodore looks at me, annoyance etched on his face. “I’m not asking your opinion,” he tells me. “All my campaign staff have brought up good suggestions for dealing with this mess for the last month. But you insisted on having it your way, even said that yesterday was the last time she’d ever print an article about us. And now, look at this mess. My polls are dropping so fast, I might as well stop campaigning for good.”

I glance at Theo’s phone again. I’m hardly listening to him. My mind is whirling. I think back to everything I said about Theo. My words had the potential to eradicate his campaign.

And yet, she hadn’t printed a single thing about them.

I’m right,I think, a fizzle of hope shooting through me. Georgina is a dirty player, but she doesn’t play as dirty as she used to. She’d given me enough respect not to print things I’d told her within the confines of our date. And, while it’s possible she’s waiting to reveal what I said in a grand way, I doubt it.

“Don’t buy the magazine,” I tell Theo, evenly meeting his furious gaze. “I did not expect her to write anything about you today, but that was mymistake. If you buyEnchanté,she will keep shooting out articles from whichever magazine hires her next. This way, she’ll shut up for good.”

Theodore’s nostrils flare. “You really think she’ll shut up for good because you take her on a couple of dates and tell her how pretty she is?”

“A bit unchivalrous, yes, but it works. Every time.” Georgina was not the only woman I’d known who’d hated me without reason, and whom I had to subdue.

Theodore fixes me with an annoyed glance. “While this might be fun if my campaign wasn’t on the line, I’m done with the bullshit of watching you get her flowers and take her on dates. Thisgirl is impossible.”

“I don’t know,” I say, thinking back to that moment during our date when I saw a bit of her wall break loose. When I told her how much I wanted her. I saw the suspicion dwindle in her eyes, so much so that she told me something about her personal life.

That was the best performance I’ve ever given in my life.

But it was easier to pull it off when I knew that every word I’d said was true.

I turn away from Theodore, discomfort burning up within me. My goal was simple: to establish myself as a charming, honest man to Gigi. I planned on sounding as honest as I could.

But everythingI’d said had been the truth. Without knowing it, she forced the truth out of me. Both concerning Theodore’s campaign and how much I wanted her.

She knows I want her. She knows shewants me.

It’s only a matter of time before my dream becomes a reality.

“I’m not going to let my campaign rest on the fate of your game-playing,” Theodore says, bringing my focus back to him. “We’re buying up her wretched magazine, and that’s that.”

I shake my head. As much as I want Theodore to win, I needto see this through. This isn’t merely about Theodore’s campaign anymore. It’s about Georgina and me, breaking down all the walls around her.

“Theo,” I tell him now, “I promiseyou that things are changing. You can’t see it now, but she’s caving in. Truly. All I need is a week or two.”

He stares at me. “You have no idea what kind of woman you’re dealing with,” he finally says, a hint of a smile on his face. “You’re not going to win her over, and I’mgoing to have to buy that magazine in a couple of weeks.”

“No,” I say, “she has no idea what kind of man Iam.”

Theodore lets out an exasperated sigh as he retrieves his phone and stomps out of my room, announcing he will make coffee before he disappears.

I reach for my phone on my bedside table.

It’s time to invite Georgina on another date.

CHAPTER8

GIGI

“Idon’t believe I even have to say it, but you look ravishingly beautiful. As always.”

My stomach jerks forward in pleasure. “Thank you,” I say, trying my hardest not to look at him directly. For the first time since I can remember, I haven’t thought negatively about Brandon all day. I didn’t even accept his invitation because I was hoping for more story ideas.
