But I was powerless to stop myself from reaching out.

“A protein shake will be great,” Theo says. He descends the stairs, drawing both my attention and Ms. Cheverton’s. “Oh, and strong black coffee.”

“Mr. Stawarski?” she asks, her gaze on me. “Are you certainyou want nothing?” she says, as though the fate of the world rested on my breakfast.

“Yes,” I snap at her, ignoring Theo’s raised eyebrows.

“Well, this is fun,” Theo says, walking over to me while toweling his hair dry. I note that he’s wearing a pair of my pants. “What’s gotten into you?”

I ignore him. Everything about this situation does not just cause me to want to lash out at everyone else. I wantto lash out at myself.

This situation was simple. All I need to do now is let Gigi go. I can’t do anything but pine over her.

The last thing I need is for Theo to tease me over this. But I needto talk to someone, and he is my brother.

I exhale, wondering how to formulate my thoughts in the least pathetic way.

Theo beats me to this. “Georgina Harris, right?”

I’m relieved that he doesn’t seem amused in the least. “Yep.”

“Fuck.” Theo rakes his hand through his wet hair. “Don’t tell me you managed to piss her off again and she’ll keep writing about us.”

I shake my head, wishing that were the case. Anything but the confused ball of feelings inside me. “No.”

He looks relieved. “What the hell is it, then?” And then, his jaw sags open. “Did you…”

Have sex?“Yes.”

Theo looks shocked. “I’m sorry I doubted you,” he says in a hushed voice. “I can’t believe yougot into her pants.”

I admit to myself that this would have been a massive ego boost only a month ago. Now, though…

“So, you’re upset because you had sex with her?” he asks. “What, was she thathorrible?”

I say nothing. Theo appears genuinely confused, but I’m already regretting talking to him about this.

But Theo proves for the millionth time that I don’t need to say a word when I’m around him.

“Damn,” he says. “She’s gotten you, hasn’t she? Don’t tell me you regret playing her.”

“I don’t,” I say automatically, but we both know I’m lying.

“Dude, what did that girl do to you?” he says, smirking.

“Shut the hell up,” I tell him, two seconds from kicking him out of my house.

He grins at me. “You’re over here apologizing and regretting playing a woman for the first time in your life. And not just any woman, but thisone, who tried to ruin us. This must be a first.”

I open my mouth to remind him that I’d done something to her in the past. But then, I clamp it shut. I’m not about to defend Georginaover my brother and myself.

Theo’s right. I’m not myself.

“Look, Bran,” he says now, his face taking on a rare, serious expression. “I don’t know what the hell is going on in your head, and I have no idea what she did to you. But I needyou to get your head straight and start to think, at least till the elections are over.”

“I’m thinking right now,” I tell him, feeling my irritation climb. “Way more than you ever have.”

Theo ignores the jibe. “You’re clearly not doing it enough, if you’re here glooming over whatever it is you think you feel for her.” He pauses and takes a deep breath. “It’s up to you who you decide to keep shagging, but Georgina Harris is way off the ladder. I needyou to remember the chaos she caused my campaign with her daily articles. She practicallyjust stopped two seconds ago. She could start again anytime. She’s a ticking time bomb. If you both keep fooling around and it ends poorly just before my election, she’s going to massacre me, Brandon. And there’s nothing you or anyone else will be able to do to stop it.”
