Chapter Four

Gabriel

I lie awake next to Sasha; her hands hold my arm tight – like she doesn’t want to lose me. I stare at her beautiful face and watch her smile like she’s dreaming.Xerxes, that asshole. Does he really care about Sasha? Or he intended to use her all along? Maybe it's why he doesn't want anything to happen to her. Sasha was his escape all along.

Sasha slides closer to me and pushes her forehead on my shoulder. I smile and smell her hair. Her scent is a mix of her shampoo and sweat. I let go of a soft chuckle and look around the room. I built this house to be her prison, but it gave me the feeling of safety and happiness for the past two days.

Should I save you instead?I ask in silence while staring at her closed eyes. Should I become her real knight who'll save her from misery? Sasha wants out of the Bratva life; I never cared about it. I always believed she was bound to that cruel fate since she was my key to getting my place in the organization. She's the finest tool to take my revenge against her father.

Vigo must have known Xerxes’s plan all along. That smart bastard. It must have been his plan all along. He wants me to save Sasha. That old fart knows she’s somebody anyone can easily fall in love with and must have taken his chances with me.

Xerxes's death will be the condemnation of my soul, but it will save Sasha and me from his viciousness. Only his death can give us the freedom to love, live, and even chase a happy ever after.

“How long are you going to stare at my face?” Sasha slowly opens her eyes and displays her loving smile.

“Let’s get married,” I tell her without hesitation.

Sasha sits up and looks at me with bewildered eyes. It's not a completely impulsive decision. Marrying her has always been part of my plan; the intention has changed only. I'm doing it to save her and maybe love her – not to make her wish she was dead.

“I have nothing to offer that can match what your father can give you, but I can and will protect you better than him,” I say nothing but the truth. Xerxes will give Sasha misery that I'll never give her. But I will protect her better because I'll take her away from the man who can harm her the most – her father. "Let's get married."

"Didn't we talk? Gabriel, you don't know my father and the organization he belongs to," Sasha speaks fast, showing her panic at my offer.

I'm a little frustrated that it isn't an outright yes, but my heart dances to a spark of happiness. Sasha doesn't want me harmed. I smile and try to kiss her, but she pushes me away.

“I’m already putting you in danger by spending another night with you,” Sasha’s frustration shows in her voice. She’s not disappointed about my offer, but she can’t accept it. “They will take you away and make you disappear. You know what I mean. No one will know about you or what happened to you. And they’ll still get what they want. I’ll be Dmitri Fador’s wife.”

"So, you don't trust I can protect you?" I frown at her.

I regret pretending to be the gentle and poor man for her. Maybe if she knows I'm richer than her father or the Fadors, she won’t waver about my offer. But it’s too late for me to change my narrative. It’s also too early to tell her the truth.

“I know you will want to protect me, Gabriel,” Sasha says while putting her head on my chest. “I don’t think I’m worth it. What we have now is great. Perfect even. But, we don’t even know if we are really in love.”

Xerxes may have let Sasha grow up sheltered, but she's still realistic. She has strong feelings for me right now, and I'm slowly having the same. But is it love? Are we in love? Frankly, I don't know the answer. But I don't want to lose her, and the reason is no longer because I want my revenge.

“We will have a lifetime to find out if this is love, Sasha. But we will have a lifetime to fall in love with each other.”

Sasha giggles upon hearing my answer; her staggered breath tickles my chest. Even I want to laugh at myself. I don’t know where the hell I get the thoughts for my reply! I wasn’t even trying to be cheesy. I slowly raise her head to look at her face.Damn it.I must be in love with her to even have romantic thoughts.

“Now I’m tempted to say yes,” Sasha says with a smile.

“Then, say yes.”

I want to yell at her for staying hesitant. It's not just a simple lack of confidence because she is confident but doesn't show it much. Just a little push and she makes things done. But Xerxes has managed to manipulate her into being a coward. Despite being intelligent and realistic, Sasha seems to believe that the world is full of wolves that are out to get her and the people she loves.

“Can we talk about this after having an early breakfast?” Sasha tries to divert the conversation again.

I snort while looking into her eyes. She doesn't only have Xerxes's eyes, but she also has his manipulative trait, but Sasha doesn't use it to harm people. Or maybe she hasn't discovered it yet. She squeezes my cheeks when I remain silent. I laugh and give her a quick kiss on the lips.

"Meet me in the kitchen. I'll cook you breakfast."

“Let’s eat out. I saw a diner on our way here,” Sasha smiles and teases, “I have a feeling we’ll end up doing another thing other than breakfast if you’ll cook.”

I laugh heartily at her joke. I rise from the bed and look at her. She does look like a woman in a Renaissance masterpiece. Red hair, grayish-green eyes, big curves, and a beautiful smile. I won’t mind waking up and staring at this beauty every day. It might be the only thing I’ll be thankful to Xerxes. But it won’t be enough to stop me from killing him.
