“If you must know, yeah. That was her.”

Faye tipped so she could look around him. “She’s cute.” With that final remark, she spun around and strode toward the counter.

Faye

Faye hated the way the disappointment flooded her chest. The girl Adam liked was beautiful. She had perfect skin, lush black hair, and deep blue eyes. From what Faye could tell, she was toned, just like any rodeo competitor would be.

No wonder Adam didn’t have any interest in Faye. She wasn’t as tall as that woman. Her hair was thinner and blonde. And she was a twig. If Adam had a type, it wasn’t anything close to Faye.

Whatever. Hadn’t she told her sisters over and over that Adam wasn’t interested? This just confirmed it. The way he froze up in front of that girl showed just how he acted when he was starstruck.

Faye heaved a sigh just as Adam came to stand beside her. He didn’t say anything, and the tension between them continued to thicken. As to why she felt so awkward suddenly, it was hard to say.

Was it possible that she wanted him to like her a little more than he did? Had she developed some sort of attraction for him?

It was entirely possible.

Shoot!

That wasn’t supposed to happen.

Okay, this was fine. It was totally fine. It was just a silly crush. That’s all. People had crushes all the time that didn’t amount to anything. She snuck a glance at him. What was it about Adam that had caught her attention in the first place? When had this attraction even started?

None of that mattered anymore. What was done was done. She’d just have to focus on helping Adam get the girl then maybe she’d get past it.

Yep. That would work.

He turned to look at her and she froze. Had he caught her staring at him? What was she thinking? Of course he did. She could tell, especially due to the small smile that tugged at his lips. Faye clasped her hands together in front of her and glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. “I’m curious about something.”

“What’s that?”

“Why haven’t you spoken to her?”

If the air could have gotten colder with one look, it did at that moment. She’d thought the tension had been heavy before, but now she knew better. “Why do you think I haven’t spoken to her?”

She lifted a shoulder. “Well, by the way you couldn’t get out a word at all… that spoke for itself. I was under the impression she at least knew who you were.”

“Dahlia knows who I am. I’ve talked to her a few times. She came in with her brother when he brought in his truck a few weeks ago.”

Faye bit back a laugh. This wasn’t funny, not really. She shouldn’t find any of this humorous at all. And yet there was a part of her that did, in fact, find this amusing. “So she knows who you are, but have you said anything to her that wasn’t related to fixing cars?”

“Of course I have. That’s how I found out she likes to do barrel racing.”

Faye turned to face him, her brows lifting. “You like a barrel racing girl?”

“Yeah, so?”

She pinched the bridge of her nose. “Please tell me you got to know her a little more than that.”

His face scrunched into a small frown. “What’s your problem with barrel racers?”

“It’s not that she’s a barrel racer, not really. Though most of the barrel racers I know aren’t the nicest people.”

He opened his mouth, but before he could argue the barista at the counter called them up. “Next.”

Faye hesitated. She should let him say his piece. But there was a growing line behind them, and she really didn’t want to have to tell him the stuff she’d heard and seen from the women in that career. There was a chance Dahlia wasn’t a career competitor. But based on what she’d heard, that wasn’t likely.
