Faye’s eyes cut to Eloise before she shook her head. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“I could try.”

Eloise had been dating more lately. She hadn’t found anyone to be serious with, but she was out in the world experiencing what none of them had before finding their soulmates. All of Faye’s sisters besides Brielle were now in serious relationships, and Brielle wasn’t in one due to personal preferences.

“Why aren’t you dating?”

“Iamdating.” Eloise tilted her head.

“No, I mean, why haven’t you found anyone to be serious with?”

Her eyes widened, but before she could say anything, Faye cut her off.

“I’m not dating anyone either. I’m just curious how come you’ve been going on so many dates but haven’t found one you want to be serious with?”

Eloise’s eyes narrowed and her lips quirked into a sly smile.

Faye sighed. “I promise there’s a reason I’m asking this, but it’s not for the reason you think. Just answer the question.”

Her sister leaned back into the wooden porch chair and shifted her focus to the landscape that surrounded their home. “I suppose it’s because I don’t want to settle down with the first guy who asks me out. I want to make sure I know what I want before I let that happen.”

“You don’t think that everyone else did the same?”

Eloise laughed. “Iknowthey didn’t.” She faced Faye and her expression turned serious. “Each of our sisters was thrown into a relationship without even considering the consequences of discovering they might be incompatible. There is no such thing as love at first sight. Just ask Brielle. She knows. There are as many different guys with different personalities out there as there are different breeds of horses. And not all of them are going to be the kind of guy you want to end up with. Why settle for something when you haven’t seen it all?”

Faye hated how much sense her sister was making. She’d allowed herself to get so caught up in her developing feelings for Adam that she hadn’t allowed herself to take a look around to see if there was anyone else who might be a better fit. It wasn’t very smart on her part.

Juvenile, in fact.

“So what does this have to do with your sour mood? Did you ask someone out and they turned you down?”

Her head whipped around and she stared at Eloise. “No. There’s no one I’m interested in that way.” It was a lie, and she knew better than to try to pull it off. All the Callahan girls knew how to read the others. It was a blessing and a curse they were gifted with by not being allowed any outside relationships.

It just turned out that Eloise was willing to overlook the fib at this moment.

Faye cleared her throat and dragged her focus away from her sister so she could try to cover up any other lies that might tumble out. “I was just thinking that I needed to get out there. We’re not getting any younger, and I have to dive in at some point, right?”

“That’s what I think,” Eloise offered.

“So how did you get started? Do you go to town and just pick up guys? Or what?”

Her sister laughed. Why did it feel like she was laughing at Faye and not just at the situation itself? Faye scowled, crossing her arms. She didn’t even really want to go on any dates with someone else. She just knew if she didn’t, she’d end up feeling like she was some poor unfortunate country girl watching the guy she liked go after someone who didn’t deserve him.

Eloise reached over the small table and placed her hand on Faye’s arm. “If you want to go on some dates, you just have to ask. I’m sure I could get a few set up for you. We could go on a couple doubles. But if you don’t want to do that, you could just come with us to the country club on the weekends and go dancing with the guys who aren’t there with dates. Well, one time a guy asked me to dance and Iknowhe was there with a date.”

Faye wrinkled her nose. “That doesn’t sound all that great. How did his date feel?”

Eloise shrugged. “I have no idea. He ended up asking me out a few weeks later.”

Lifting her brows, Faye shook her head. “Men are disgusting.”

Her sister snickered. “Yeah, well, they can’t all smell like roses. It wasn’t like he had a girlfriend, and he didn’t ask me out when he was on his date.”

“Maybe I don’t want to go on any dates after all. This all sounds like politics but worse.”

“You’re not wrong.” Eloise poked Faye’s upper arm. “Hey, what about that guy you’ve been taking riding? You could ask him out.”

And just like that, Faye’s face flushed red-hot. “No.”
