Boy, he was butchering this. He should have figured out a way to phrase this in his mind before trying to speak to her about it. Now he not only looked incompetent, he probably sounded like a fool. “How long have you been with Travis?”

She stilled, then slowly she climbed out of where she’d managed to put herself. “So itisa girl.”

He shook his head, his eyes closed. “It doesn’t matter. I just want to ask a few questions.”

“Okay, I’ve been with him for a couple years, I guess.”

“When things first started out, were you guys talking all the time?”

Bridget cocked her head and placed a hand on her hip. “I don’t understand where you’re getting at with this line of questioning.”

“Were you talking every day? Seeing each other frequently.”

“Sure. I mean, I was hanging out with his sister a lot, and of course, he’d be around because of her. What does that have to do with—”

“You’re a girl.”

She laughed. “Yes, that would be accurate.”

“I kissed this woman on Saturday. And it’s Friday. She hasn’t messaged me or called. I wanted to give her time to think over what happened, but I’m on edge because now I feel like this lack of communication could only mean one thing.”

“Ooh. Yeah. That doesn’t sound good. She hasn’t responded to any of your texts?”

“I haven’t messaged her.”

This time Bridget tossed her head back and laughed loud enough that it echoed in the shop. “Well, why not?”

“I already told you.”

“I don’t care about that. You kissed her, then you walked away. Now you’re wondering why she isn’tmessagingyou? Buddy, she’s not messaging you because you threw her a curve ball. She doesn’t want to be the first one to reach out.”

“But I’m the one who kissedher. Doesn’t that mean she should be the one to tell me what it means?”

Bridget rolled her eyes. “She’s probably trying to figure out the same thing. What if she’s wondering if this is a fluke? She might be talking herself out of ever seeing you again—”

“That’s not gonna happen.”

“Oh yeah? Sounds like someone has a bit too much confidence if you ask me.”

Adam gestured toward Faye’s mother’s truck which had taken up one of the bays for the last month and a half. “She has to come get that at some point.”

Bridget’s eyes bounced to the truck then back to his face. The only way he could describe her expression was that it was one of pity. “Oh,Adam. Is that why you offered free labor? You were trying to impress her? Wait, youkissedher? Well, if she’s not shown any interest in you this far, I doubt—”

“It wasn’t like that.” He let out a groan and dragged his hand down his face. This wasn’t how this conversation was supposed to go. She was supposed to tell him that Faye was just taking her time and she’d get back to him when she was ready. Now he didn’t know if he should have been touching base with her all this time.

They were in the modern century. It shouldn’t be this hard.

“So I call her—text her—whatever. Then what?”

Bridget’s smile still ate at him. He hated the way she was making him feel like he’d messed everything up with just one look. And maybe he had. There was no telling how everything would go from this point forward. He didn’t even know if he could fix this.

Bridget leaned her hip against the truck. She studied him, her eyes seemingly able to read his thoughts which made his brain itch. “No. Don’t text her. Don’t call. You’ve waited all week long, and if I were her and I hadn’t heard from you, I would assume you weren’t as interested as you may have made it seem.”

“But Iam—”

“Doesn’t matter if you are or aren’t at this point. You arebothto her, and you’ve let her stew all week long about what that kiss might have meant. If you want my advice, I’d go see her tonight and take her on a walk or a picnic… something where you can tell her how you feel.”

“That’s just it. I don’t know how I feel.”
