Faye stiffened when Bridget headed in their direction.

“This one’s done.” Bridget stood nearby.

Adam poked his head out of the hood of the car. “Good. Put together the paperwork and we’ll give them a call.”

“What about that oil change this morning?”

He hit his head on the hood of the car then withdrew, rubbing his scalp. “What about it?”

“Dahlia seemed to think you weren’t charging her the full price.”

Faye froze.

Dahlia.

TheDahlia.

The woman who Adam had a crush on had been here. Faye swallowed back the unease that crept up her throat. Bridget had said she needed an oil change. The woman wasn’t here to steal Adam away; she just came to the only mechanic in town.

Adam sighed. “What did you charge her?”

Bridget placed her hand on her hip. “I charged her the usual rate. I’m not letting her get away with something.”

He rolled his eyes. “I told her there’d be a surcharge for coming in before we opened.”

A slow smile spread across Bridget’s face. “I guess it’s a good thing I added a little extra to the bill.” She winked at Faye. “You know, because she’s a little much.” Bridget sauntered off then called over her shoulder, “If you think it was too much, you can offer her a credit or something. She paid it in full, though, so maybe just leave it be.”

Faye spun to face Adam. “You didn’t tell me that Dahlia came in.”

He ducked in under the hood again. “Why would I need to tell you that?”

“Because…” Faye bit back what she was about to say. Jealousy didn’t look good on her, and that was the last thing she needed to add to the mix.

Adam withdrew and gave her an expectant look. “Because?”

She crossed her arms. “Because I thought we told each other everything.”

Something strange flickered across his features. He dove back under the hood and got to work. “She needed an oil change before heading out to a few rodeo events that are nearby. I told her I’d go ahead and let Bridget handle it.”

“The rodeo is back?”

“Yeah,” he grunted.

Tension filled the air between them. This was a sore subject, and Faye knew better than to believe it would go away so soon.

“Adam?”

“Hmm.”

“I want you to know how much I appreciate you.”

He grunted.

“Thank you so much for staying out of the rodeo. I know you were interested, and maybe in the future—”

“I signed up, Faye.”

She choked on her words, her stomach knotting and her lungs refusing to bring in the oxygen she needed. “What?”
