Her face heated and a tear escaped her eyes as she pulled onto her family’s property. If this was the right decision, then why did it hurt so much?

It got harder to breathe when she felt this way. Adam had been the first guy she’d ever confessed her feelings for. He’d been the one that she had entertained spending the rest of her life with.

And yes, she knew that fantasy was ridiculous. People couldn’t just fall in love with the first person they met. And if they did, it was better for them to date around before settling. Divorce rates being what they were, Faye was smarter than to believe she’d get her happily ever after with someone who had such different views than her own.

That logic only infuriated her more. Falling in love was supposed to be easy. Hadn’t her sisters all found their soul mates? Was there something wrong withher?

Faye heaved a sigh and pushed the door open before climbing out of her truck. She slammed the door shut a little harder than she probably should have and stomped toward the house. Her mood left much to be desired, evidenced by the way anyone crossing her path on the property gave her a wide berth.

Flinging open the door, Faye marched inside and headed for the kitchen. If she was lucky, everyone would have already eaten dinner by now and she’d just be able to have the food that was left over. Usually, someone fixed a plate for her and put it in the fridge.

She slowed as she got closer to the kitchen, voices giving her pause.

“Someone needs to talk to her. She’s scaring off the hunters.”

“She’s fine. Just leave her alone and let her figure things out. This was her first crush. She’s allowed to be heartbroken.”

Faye burst into the kitchen, glaring at her sisters, Sean and her father. The other men in her sisters’ lives weren’t at the table, which was probably for the best with the way she was feeling. “Adam wasn’t just somecrush.” She breathed heavily even though she hadn’t been exerting any energy. “Ilovedhim. I could see us getting married and spending the rest of our lives together. That’s how deeply I cared for him. Everything was great until that dinner we had. Everyone made him feel like an idiot. That’s when the problems started. So if you want to talk to me about my attitude, maybe you should all look at yourselves and figure out what you did to contribute to the failure of my relationship.” She spun on her heel and stormed from the room, her appetite lost.

Her skin was flushed and her hands shook with the fury that was quickly blinding her. She charged up the stairs to her room and slammed the door for good measure. Once inside, she let her gaze sweep over the room and that’s when the exhaustion claimed her.

Faye stumbled backward and leaned against the door. She slid down the wood, her hands over her face and let out a sob.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to go, and it wasn’t just the breakup. She was supposed to be an empowered woman who could look at this situation with clarity. What happened to her that she couldn’t get over this ache that had spread from her heart to the rest of her body?

“Faye?”

She stiffened, her sob catching in her throat. There was no distinguishing which sister was behind her door at that moment. It could have been any one of them. Whoever it was sure had the nerve to come up to her room right now.

The doorknob rattled and the door bumped against Faye’s back. “Faye, it’s Brielle.”

“And Eloise.”

Faye rolled her eyes. The only two sisters who weren’t married or in relationships. They wouldn’t understand what she was going through. “I don’t want to talk to either of you,” Faye shot back. “Just leave me alone.”

“You know we can’t do that.”

“Yeah. If we go back down there, they’re going to ask us how it went.”

They murmured something to each other that Faye couldn’t hear, then Brielle’s voice came down low right behind Faye’s head. “Just let us in. You can tell us what happened.”

“Youknowwhat happened.” Faye leaned her head against the door with a thud. “He wants to do the rodeo, and I wasn’t comfortable with it.”

“That can’t be the whole story.”

The anguish Faye felt only expanded and another fat tear rolled down her cheek. No, that wasn’t the whole story. But right now, no one could grasp what she was dealing with. Faye got to her feet and pulled the door open. “I don’t know what to do.”

Brielle and Eloise moved in on her, pulling her into a tight hug. No words were uttered, and they didn’t need to be. Their compassion was felt fully in that moment.

Faye moved to her bed and sat on the edge. “I feel like an idiot.” She didn’t bother looking up at either one of her sisters. They wouldn’t understand anyway. It was just nice to have someone to talk to who wasn’t going to tell her what to do.

“What happened?” Eloise sat beside her and draped her arm around Faye’s shoulders. “Because I can tell you one thing. You’re not an idiot.”

Faye snorted. “Wait until you hear what happened.” This time she glanced up to meet first Brielle’s gaze and then Eloise’s. “You remember that dinner when Adam said he wanted to be in the rodeo? We went on a walk, and he promised me he wouldn’t sign up.”

Neither one of her sisters said a thing, but based on the way Brielle’s single brow lifted, she didn’t approve of something. Or maybe she didn’t believe that Adam would do something like making a promise like that.

Clasping her hands together, Faye took a deep breath and let it out. “He seemed a little out of sorts for a few days, so I went over to make him feel better.” She nibbled on her lower lip then let out another heavy breath. “He told me he signed up anyway. He broke his promise, so I ended it. And now I don’t know if I did the right thing.” She shook her head firmly. “No. I did the right thing. I just didn’t think it would hurt this much.”
