Maddox raises an eyebrow.

“Yeah, I know how it sounds. But the man’s alcoholic state is none of our business since we’re just buying his property.”

“Everything about our clients is our business,” he says, and sweeps off his shirt. I swallow watching his shoulders move in that languorous fluid motion as he snags a new shirt from his open suitcase and starts putting it on.

“Come on,” he says.

“Where are we going?”

“Out. Anywhere but here.”

“Why?”

He places his hands on the bed and leans in till we're face to face. Heat simmers in his eyes. “Because if I stay here any longer, I’m going to keep doing exactly what we were doing before. But we can’t do that.”

“We can’t?” The disappointed question escapes me, though I don’t intend it to.

He smirks. “I thought we already silently decided that this was a one-time thing.”

“Oh, yeah.” Heat fills my face. “Right.”

The amusement doesn’t leave his face but I break eye contact. I get up and grab a change of clothes and head into the bathroom.

A few minutes later, we walk out to the lobby, noting the crowd that has formed. It consists of elderly men and women in cargo shorts and binoculars around their necks. They stare at us curiously, but Maddox ignores them, heading to the front desk.

Patience is laughing with two gentlemen but grins at us when we approach.

“Heading out?” she asks.

“What are the best restaurants to eat in this town?" Maddox asks. "I don’t think I can stomach another of whatever it was we had last night.”

Her nose wrinkles. “Yeah. Yule likes to practice French cuisine but the results leave a lot to be desired.”

She drums her fingers on the table for a few seconds pursing her lips in thought. “I guess, if you’re looking for something fancy, you should check out Mizos. It’s this fusion restaurant right near the bridge and tourists sometimes go there. They also have a romantic candlelight couple's table that I'm told is beautiful."

“Not looking for fancy,” he tells her. "I want the biggest juiciest burger you've ever seen.”

Neither Patience nor I expect the answer nor the way he practically growls it. It triggers a responding clenching in my gut. Patience blinks a little and then she swallows a little before she answers “Erm, well, Hal’s makes good burgers.”

“Hal’s?”

"It's a bar near Old Man Clancy's little forest house."

“Hal’s it is. Come on." Maddox starts walking without further ado. One hand goes around my waist and I hurry to keep up with his stride as he makes it out to his car.

“I didn’t know you were into burgers,” I say as he holds the door open for me.

“Haven’t had them since I was sixteen.”

I blink at him. “For real?” I may like to watch my waistline, but I do like to indulge in a burger once in a while. It’s hard to imagine anyone going so long without them.

“I only eat them when I’m incurably horny,” he says as he enters the car.

"Pardon?" I think I heard wrong, but whatever I heard caused a rush to overload my body.

Maddox glances at me and the sensations worsen. “It might be the only thing that can get the taste of your sweet pussy out of my mind.”

Oh, Jesus, lord, give me strength.
