I’m not scared of what he makes me feel either.

It’s why I allow our strange relationship to continue. If he breaks my heart, I’ll get over it. I’ll move on. Because I realize he can’t breakme. So, why not try this? I’ll continue my work as his agent and keep creating a fantastic catalogue like I’m doing. But I’ll be fine. I was fine before him and I’ll be fine after him.

And if I’m not scared of Maddox, I’m no longer scared of his secretary and no longer willing to put up with her bullshit.

It’s why I confront Natacha in the breakroom for not sending the forms I asked her for, even after I reminded her three times.

“Hey,” I say, when I walk in, uncaring that she’s eating. “We need to talk.”

Natacha sneers. “Really? Are you already done spreading your legs for the boss, so now you’re going to try and pretend you actually work here?”

“You’re going to send my client the forms I asked you for,” I tell her ignoring the barb. “And you’re going to do it now.”

“Excuse me?” She raises an eyebrow. “Can’t you see I’m on my lunch break?”

“Yes. But if you had done it the other three times I asked you too, we wouldn’t be here today. The client needs it by close of day and I’m tired of waiting. Send it.”

“Listen, you little slut—“

“The slut is the one who’s unprofessional enough to risk losing a client just to one up me,” I tell her. “Now, you send it, or you tell me your computer password so I can send it myself.”

“No need,” comes a voice from behind me. I turn as Maddox strides in through the break room doors. Natacha gasps behind me. Her panic is palpable but I keep my eyes on him. He keeps his on me but I know he’s talking to her when he says, “Send the forms, Natacha. And then you’re fired.”

She sputters for a few seconds. “What?”

“You of all people know that I hate when people play with company matters,” he says sparing her a cutting glance that has her shaking in her seat. “If you can’t do your job, then I don’t see why I have you here. Clear out your desk by the end of the day.”

“You can’t do that,” I say.

He cocks his eyebrow at me. “Last I checked, I was the boss. I can do anything I want.”

“It’s nearly peak season. There’s too many changes and moving pieces right now and everyone in the company needs to be on their A-game. There’s not enough time to train a new secretary,” I continue undeterred. “Natacha is very good at what she does. She just did this to mess with me. But she won’t do that again, right?”

I glance at Natacha whose head is swinging between the two of us. She nods fervently looking chastened.

“Please don’t fire me,” she says. “I need this job.”

Maddox stares at her, and then back to me for a few seconds. Then he nods.

“Fine,” he says. “But if I hear anything like this happening ever again—”

“It won’t,” Natacha jumps to her feet immediately. “I promise.”

And then she rises to her feet and scurries off, leaving her lunch abandoned.

“Nicely done,” he says when she does and I can see the pride in his expression. Satisfaction skitters up my back and warmth blooms in my stomach.

“Have you ever had a homemade Souvlaki before?” I ask to change the subject, and also because I’m in a very good mood.

He shakes his head. “Can’t say that I have.”

I smile at him. “Well, tonight, you’re in for a treat.”

Maddox follows me home, and watches Mimi while I head to the grocery store. When I get back, laughter is heard all the way from the driveway

“Is everything okay in here?” I ask when I open the door.
