ChapterOne

Knox

We had a game this afternoon, and my head was all over the place. We were playing against our rival team. Nashville Nemesis. They were dirty, rough, and wouldn’t stop until they had us down on points, but we were dirtier, rougher and we won’t stop until the game is ours. Music thrums through my ears as I scroll through my social feed, stopping when I see her.Tate.

Her long, blonde curls tumble down around her. The emerald in her eyes so bright as they pierce through mine. My heart drums under my white tee, I have my grey sweatshirt hood pulled over my head. I sigh, scrolling by as I feel a slap round the back of my head. I jump and look over my shoulder to see Cooper.

“What are you doing?” he asks, slumping down next to me on the sofa, as I tug my earphone out.

“Just having some downtime,” my eyes lift to the clock, a smirk pulling at my lips.

“You ready for the game?” Cooper asks, twisting the lid of his drink and taking a mouthful.

“Ready as I can be.” I turn to look at him, my cocky smile replacing the smirk. “The question is Cooper, are you?”

“So ready,” he leans forward, rubbing his hands together.

“Your family coming to watch?” I try to hide the excitement creeping up my throat.

“Yeah of course, home game to us isn’t it,” he nudges into me, “fuck, I am pumped.”

“You seem it,” I agree, because he does. His energy is electrifying, if he could, he would be bouncing off the fucking walls. He pushes up, running behind me and rubbing my shoulders.

“Get hyped with me man, we’re going to smash the Nashville Nemesis.”

“I know mate, I know,” I chuckle, darting forward to stand, breaking his hands off me.

“Let’s go and see the rest of the team, it’s game time baby.” Cooper winks at me, slapping me on the back as he turns to walk out the lounge. I should be excited for the game, but I’m not. I’m more excited about seeing Tate standing behind the glass, in the front row watching me. Well, watching her brother, but I can pretend she is looking at me.

I snort a laugh, shaking my head from side to side and follow Cooper out of the room.

When did I becomethisdude?

ChapterTwo

Tate

Brushingmy hair out of its tight ringlets and setting my middle parting, I smile at my reflection. Wearing my grey and silver Seattle Steels jersey with my brother’s number on the back, but all I want is to be wearing Knox’s. All I want isKnox.

But it’ll never happen.

He is fartooold for me.

This is what happens when your parents have you in their forties and the age gap between you and your brother is ten years.

I’m just akidto Knox. It doesn’t matter how much I try and make him look at me, to make himseeme and show him that I am grown. I’m not a little girl anymore. Sighing, I slip my gold hoops through my ears and fiddle with the thin gold chain that hangs round my neck, dangling a simple T.

“Are you ready?” my mom calls up the stairs.

“Yup, just getting my shoes on!” I shout back. Cooper’s jersey swamps me and fits more like a dress than a top. I finish off my look with wide legged, light denim jeans and slip my feet into my black and white dunks.

I give myself a quick spray of my perfume then pose in the floor length mirror and lift my phone out to take a photo. I turn to the side, bending and lifting one of my legs and tipping my head back slightly as I smile and take the photo. I smirk at it, posting it straight onto my grid, then onto my stories. Knox always watches my stories but will never like the post so now I only post on my stories for him.

“Tate!” my mom bellows and I rush out my bedroom, running down the stairs.

“Sorry,” I say sweetly and angelic.

“It’s okay, I just want to see your brother before the game starts,” she says, pride etched all over her face, her eyes glistening with happiness.
