“Yeah. That’s pretty badass.” Tugging her against my chest, I run my fingers through her cloud of thick hair. Shelley settles on my chest, her eyes locked on my nightstand.

“I used to go and lie in the desert.”

She used towhat? “Like, at night? To look at the stars?”

Lifting her head, Shelley wrinkles her nose at me. “No. During the day. When it was hot, and the sun was baking down.”

“Uh, why?”

Grinning, Shelley crawls off the bed, wriggling her fingers at me. My eyebrows shoot up, but I likewise stand, sliding my hand into hers and letting her lead me downstairs.

When I turn toward the Chevy, she shakes her head, grinning.

“No. Let’s take your bike. Unless you don’t like using it in the desert?”

“The desert is the best place to fucking use it. You can really open the throttle.”

Shelley giggles, crossing to my rig. I grab the helmet I had Bullseye buy and stash in the saddlebag, setting it on her head and adjusting the strap as she watches me with amused eyes.

“I didn’t use one of these the other night.”

“No. But you fucking will from now on, kid.”

Swinging a leg over my rig, Shelley eagerly climbs on, clinging tightly to me. Fuck. It feelsrightto have her on the back of my rig. I made the right choice in keeping her here with me.

There isn’t much traffic out on the highway through the Mojave. I pull over near the lone Joshua tree, smirking up at it as we climb off my rig. I fucked Shelley under this tree in her fancy, fuck off BMW. That was a good day.

Shelley giggles, her eyes lingering on the tree as well. I wonder if she’s thinking about what I am. I don’t get a chance to ask because she takes my hand, leading me off the road, finding the small spot of shade cast by the tree, lying down in the fine desert sand.

She beckons me with a crooked finger. Grinning, I lay beside her in the shade, staring at the blue, unrelenting, cloudless sky.

“So, this is what you did for fun?”

Shelley shuffles, digging her shoulder more into the sand. She’s going to need to wash her hair when we get back. I can feel granules of sand working their way into my short hair – I can’t imagine what her cloud of thick hair must be like. Sandy, probably.

“Not fun,” she admits, her eyes locked on the sky. I turn my head, heated sand brushing my cheek as I stare at the side of her face. She looks…at peace.

“So… to feel the heat?” I guess again.

“It makes me feel unimportant.”

My eyebrows shoot up. That’s…interesting. “You come here to feel unimportant?”

“I love it.” A small smile dances across her lips. “I’m nobody and nothing out here. Just a speck of dust in the whole world. You know, unimportant.”

I don’t know if I like the sound of that. “You’re important to me.”

My hand closes around hers, tangling our fingers together. Shelley’s smile widens, but she keeps her eyes locked on the blue sky.

“Yeah, but not to the universe.”

“Fuck the universe. I’m all you need.”

A giggle rips from Shelley’s face, and she finally tears her eyes off the sky, turning her head so our noses are almost touching, our eyes burning together.

“Yeah. You are.”

Damn straight, I am. Maneuvering my arm, I slide it under her shoulders, hauling her against my chest. Snuggling together, we stare at the sky.
