“O-okay.”

He tugs my hair again, leaving and pulling the door shut behind him. Shelley giggles, drawing my dazed attention back to her, my cheeks heating.

“Peaches?” Her eyebrow arches, and I flush darker at the implication in her tone. Yeah, we’re not…together.

“He just started calling me that. I have no idea why.”

“Uh-huh.” She smiles knowingly, brushing aside my stuttered protestations.

“So, this is pretty much it, bathrooms, kitchen, all that.” She gestures around the room, her head snapping around and a grin crossing it as the door creaks open.

A slim woman in her late twenties walks in, followed by a tall man in his mid-thirties with model good looks and serial killer ice blue eyes. He is carrying a baby carrier while she frowns at him.

“I’m not breakable, Griffin,” she is snapping at him while he ignores her protests. “I can carry it.”

“You should be resting,” he rumbles back at her, effortlessly handing the heavy-ish-looking carrier to Shelley, who takes it with both hands.

“I wouldn’t needrestingif you hadn’t done this to me.Again,” the woman hisses back. He grins at her, looking drop-dead gorgeous, his eyes warming up as he cups her jaw, kissing her tenderly.

He doesn’t even glance at me as he walks out. The woman bends to kiss the little girl asleep in the carrier on the top of the head.

“Wren, this is Naomi. Naomi, this is Wren Esk. She’s our boss.”

“Hi,” I wave awkwardly at her. Wren turns to me with a warm smile.

“Nice to meet you. I’m across the hall in my office all day. Come to me with anything Shelley can’t help you with. I’ll also need your bank details at some stage for your paychecks.” She turns back to Shelley, who is grinning at her with mischief sparkling in her eyes.

“You’re pregnant again?”

“Yeah,” Wren sighs. “You hired your assistant just in time.”

“Couldn’t resist that Jacob’s ladder, huh?”

“It’s my Kryptonite.” She waves over her shoulder as she leaves, Shelley snickering softly.

Once the door has swung shut behind her, Shelley places the carrier down in a sleeping area, waving me over.

“This is Arianna. She’s four months old.”

“Is she the youngest?”

“That we look after? No. Gillian Lawson is three months. She won’t be in today. She only comes three days a week. Her grandmother looks after her and her two-year-old sister the other two.”

“So, who do we have today?”

This should be a breeze if they’re all as peaceful as Arianna. Shelley grins at me.

“Ethan Shaw is two, and his little sister Lillian is six months. They will both be in today. So will Jack Parson. He’s five months. Simon Killen is also two, coming in after his older brother gets dropped off at school. Jacob is five.”

Six kids. Not all babies. That shouldn’t be too hard with the two of us, right? Famous last words.

“Hey, little man!”

I glance over to where Strafe is high-fiving Killer’s nephew/adopted son.

“I’m picking up Simon!”
