“My life with Viper is none of your business.”

Joey’s eyes narrow, something flickering across her face. Her shoulders slump, and her face clears, leaving her looking vulnerable and sad.

“You’re right. I’m sorry.” Looking up, she offers me the first semi-genuine smile I have ever had from her. “Truce? I think there is a lot we need to talk out.”

My instincts are hammering me hard. She can’t be serious. That’s all it took? I should have told her to screw offyearsago. I nod, feeling like I should be guarded while hope blooms in my chest. Mama is gone. This could be a real chance at having a proper sisterly relationship with Joey. I’m not about to spit in her face.

“I’d like that.”

Joey’s face lights up, and she beams. “Do you have time today? I mean, you’re not at work, so I thought….”

She trails off, looking uncertain. My heart thuds. Of course today! I don’t want to lose this opportunity!

“Sure. I have a few errands to run, but I’m free in about two hours.”

Joey grins, nodding eagerly. “The water reservoir?”

I grin back. We used to picnic there with Mama as kids. I think she might want a proper conversation. Oh my god.

I’m walking on cloud nine as she steps out of the way with another small smile, ducking her head. I cross to Vicky, beaming as she settles the towel and gown, pocketing my glasses and seating me at the basin.

“You look happy. I take it that conversation went well?” she murmurs, running the gloriously warm water over my hair.

“It wasn’t the Treaty of Versailles…but it wasn’t opening salvos either.”

Vicky is silent, and when I open my eyes, her lips are pursed as she studies me.

“What?”

“Nothing. I’m glad Joey is coming around. It’s about time.”

“Yeah. It is.”

My eyes flutter closed, and I sigh contentedly as Vicky gives me an orgasm-inducing head massage, moving me across to her station again, spinning the chair so our eyes meet in the mirror. Joey is doing highlights on an older woman beside us, laughing and screwing up her nose. Her eyes flicker over me, and I get another tentative smile, which I return.

“What are we thinking?”

“Uh. I’m not sure. Just a trim?”

Vicky pouts into the mirror. “Boring. Here I thought you wanted me to work my magic.”

“Any and all magic is welcome.Sowelcome. I don’t know what I want. Usually, I only get a trim. It lives in a ponytail anyway.”

Sighing, Vicky combs through my hair, clipping some of it up.

“What does Viper like about your hair?”

Joey’s smile falters, but she hitches it back up, laughing at something the lady in her chair says, winking at me when she catches my eye in the reflection. I turn my attention back to Vicky and shrug.

“He doesn’t talk about my hair.”

“Does he touch it?” She frowns, starting to trim it. I’m careful not to shrug. I don’t want to lose a weird chunk.

“Uh, he strokes it sometimes. When we’re watching TV.”

I sneak a peek at Joey, but she’s frowning, focused on unraveling a piece of tin foil, not paying attention. Vicky nods, standing back at arm’s length and frowning.

“I’ll give you layers and shape it around your face. You’ll still have the length and be able to tie it up for work, but it’ll be totally va-va-voom at home when you brush it out for him. And I’ll blow it out today, so you look fabulous when he gets home.”
