Keene makes a zipper motion over his mouth.
“Well, I’d want super strength,” Juno says.
Eli nods.
“Flying all the way,” Olivia pipes up.
“Me too,” Brooklyn agrees.
“What about you, Declan?” Brooklyn asks.
“Read minds,” I say, flatly. Maggie’s eyes jerk up to mine, the first time she’s looked at me this whole damn time.
“What about you, Maggie?” I say, my gaze unflinching.
“I’d like to never need to sleep,” she says.
“What?” Eli laughs. “That’s a weird power.”
“Like I’d never get tired. You’d get to live twice as much if you never needed to sleep. Think of all I’d get done.”
Will tilts his head to the side and says, “Not a bad idea, actually, but I think I’d go with reading minds like Declan.”
Elizabeth is shaking her head. “I don’t think you’d like that. Wouldn’t it be awful to know what everyone is thinking about you all the time?”
He shrugs. “It would be awfully useful – especially in this town.”
Celeste gives him a knowing look.
James says, “I’d like to be able to see the future.”
Everyone’s ohhs.
“That would be useful for the President,” Keene says.
The rest of the group divides into smaller conversations, and I just watch Maggie eat. Or rather, not eat. She’s just pushing food around her plate.
“Maggie, are you not hungry?” I say, loudly.
Her face jerks up, and she scowls at me. “I’m hungry.”
“Not eating much.” My voice is not kind. Everyone has fallen silent. Eli shoots me a confused look.
She shrugs.
“Feeling nauseous?”
There’s a brief flash of panic in her eyes and then she spears a potato and puts it in her mouth. Everyone resumes talking, but I notice Elizabeth watching Maggie.
Will leans toward me, “Stop being mean.”
Eli whispers. “What the fuck is up with you?”
Elizabeth hasn’t taken her eyes off Maggie. “Maggie, are you sure you’re alright? You look a little pale.”
Silence falls over the room again.
Maggie does look pale. Her eyes flash down to her plate and then back at Elizabeth. Before she can answer, I say, “She’s pregnant.”
