“I want you to go on a date with me once a week.”

“What? Why?” I stammer.

A lazy smile turns up his mouth. “Because I’d like to remind you why we used to be friends.”

“Why do we need to go on dates to do that?” I counter.

“I want to set aside time every week to talk, and I think this is the best way to do it. I’ll take you wherever you want. Indulge all of those pregnancy cravings.”

As I’m considering this, he says, “We have to co-parent, Maggie. It’s best for everyone. Particularly...” He pauses and nods toward my stomach and then continues. “if we can manage to get along.”

I sigh. He’s right. Damn him.

“You have to talk with me on these dates too. You can’t just come and eat.”

“Fine,” I mutter. “I’ll come, eat, and talk.”

His smile grows.

I point at him. “One more thing.”

“What?”

“It’s back to monogamy for us. I know you use protection with other people, but I don’t want even that sort of risk. STDs can be really dangerous for...”

He holds up his hands. “I got it. I can do that. No problem.”

“You sure – will your prom queens be disappointed?” It’s a cheap shot, but I can’t resist.

He just narrows his eyes and then I say, “Can you get tested again? They tested me at my doctor’s appointment, so I’ve been tested recently, but...”

He opens his mouth like he’s about to interrupt and then he stops himself. I stop talking and wait for him. He finally says, “Okay, I’ll get tested.”

“Does that settle it?” I say. “Anything else you want to add?”

He shakes his head.

“I’m happy with this for right now.” I say and then don’t move. He watches me for a moment and then says, “Is there anything else you need?”

I feel my face redden. “Well, I was hoping...”

“Oh...that.” He scratches the back of his head. “Now?”

I bite my lip and then say, “I don’t want to do, um, anything that could risk...”

“You want my hand,” he interrupts, staring me straight in the eye.

I’m sweating now. “I can return the favor.”

He gets a devilish look on his face and then says, “I should make you beg.”

I feel my face flush all the way to my ears. “Aren’t you?”

He snorts and then says, “Okay, I’ll do it, but you’re playing by my rules.”

I swallow. I have no idea what that means.

“Undress for me,” he says.
