She nods. “We’ll make a good team. I’d like that.”

My heart feels like it’s about to explode, but I don’t want to come across too eager – I don’t want to give away too much of my real feelings, so instead I give her hand a little squeeze and then open my laptop again. “Well, now that’s out of the way, I really need to get some work done.”

She laughs loudly and shakes her head. I let a sly smile spread across my face as I start typing again.










Chapter Fifty-Five

Maggie

I’ve entered the realitytelevision stage of bedrest. It’s inevitable. There’s no point in fighting it. When Declan walks into the room, he looks from the screen to me and back again. “Really?”

I hold my hands up and say, “Don’t judge.”

He laughs. We’ve been watching nineties action movies every evening together for the past week, and it’s been delicious fun, but I don’t think I’ll rope him into watchingLove and Hate Islandwith me.

“Did you finish all of that British baking show?”

“I did.”

“Are you sure? Could you understand them?”

I wrinkle my nose. “I had the closed caption on, so yes, I could understand them.”

“I love that you have to watch that andTed Lassowith the closed caption on.”

I make a face. “It’s not my fault. It’s like they are speaking another language.”

He chuckles and watches the screen for a moment. It’s a dramatic elimination – everyone is wearing tiny bathing suits. He pulls his eyes away and says, “I liked the baking show better.”

I laugh. “Me too.”

“Can I pause it for a second?” he says.

“Sure.”

He picks up the remote and presses pause.
