Declan

––––––––

“Hey Vivi.” I hold myhand out, and she fist bumps me. “What’s up?”

“I have a new brother,” she says, pointing across the room.

“I know,” I answer. “That’s pretty cool. Are you a good big sister?”

She frowns just a little and says, “Of course, I’m good at everything.”

I laugh. “I’m not going to argue with you about that. Did you know I’m going to have a baby boy soon?”

She frowns and shakes her head. “You can’t have a baby. You’re a boy.”

I laugh. “True. Aunt Maggie is having the baby, but it’s my baby too.”

“Cool,” she says. “I like babies.”

“Me too.” I point toward Elizabeth and James. “Why don’t you introduce me to your brother?”

James gives me a big smile when Vivi and I walk closer. “Vivi was just telling me how good of big sister she is.”

James’s smile grows. “She is. She is a really good big sister.”

“I can hold baby brother,” she says, proudly.

“Really?”

She nods and then sits down on the couch and holds out her hands.

James laughs and then says to me, “Well, I guess you’re going to have to wait in line.”

James sits beside her and moves Everett into her lap. She looks up at me with big eyes, a wide smile across her face.

“I’m impressed,” I say.

Everette opens his eyes and blinks a few times. His face scrunches like he’s offended by the light and unsure of this small person holding him.

“He’s awake!” Vivi yells and Everett jumps.

“Well, he’s awake now for sure,” Elizabeth says with a laugh.

He starts fussing and Vivi looks up at me and says, “Your turn, Uncle Declan.”

I laugh. “Thanks. Whatever happened to you broke it, you bought it?”

She just gives me a confused look as I take her brother from her arms and hold him to my chest. It feels like he weighs nothing but at the same time – his warmth feels so comforting in my arms. I bounce him a few times, and he stops crying.

“Wow. Uncle Declan. You are good at this too.”

“Thanks, Vivi,” I say. Everett gives a big yawn and then curls up against my chest and falls back asleep.

“Vivi’s right,” James says. “You are good at this.”

I give a nervous laugh and then sit down on the couch. “I hope so.”

“I’ll let you know the secret of parenting,” Elizabeth whispers.
