Chapter Sixty-Four

Declan

Isit on the otherside of the hospital room and watch her feed Ian. Emotion washes over me as I take in this scene – Maggie, my Maggie, breastfeeding my son. My eyes start to burn, and I blink back tears. She looks down at Ian and laughs. “You’re not eating anymore. You’re just sleeping.”

“I’ll hold him,” I say, walking over. I take him from her arms. I can’t resist. I lean down and kiss her on the top of the head.

“What’s that look for?” she says when I don’t walk away immediately.

“You’re amazing. Everything. I just can’t get over it. I couldn’t have done it.”

She just shoots me a look of disbelief. “I’m sure you could have.”

“No, Maggie. I don’t think so. I’m really proud of you.”

She lowers the hospital bed and fluffs her pillow. I hand her a sleep mask and earplugs.

“Get some sleep,” I say.

She pulls the sleep mask over her eyes. “A whole hour if I’m lucky.”

“I’ve got him. Just try to rest. I’ll wake you up when he needs to eat again.”

She settles down. I don’t know how she’s holding it together. She’s hardly slept in three days. I check my phone and then quietly step out into the hallway.

James and Elizabeth are waiting with about a dozen Secret Service agents. Their faces light up as soon as they see me – or rather Ian. They are both looking at him, sleeping in my arms.

“Oh, my god,” Elizabeth says, leaning closer. She wipes a tear away from her eye. “He’s perfect.”

“Yeah, he is,” I say. “Wanna hold him?”

She nods. “We both washed our hands.”

I hand him over. Elizabeth looks down at him without a word and then tears start to pour down her face. James puts his hand on her back. “You okay?”

She sniffs a few times and says, “I wish Mom and Dad were here to see this.”

He wraps his arm around her shoulder and gives her a squeeze. She doesn’t take her eyes off Ian, but her body starts to shake.
