After we walk for a bit, the women stop in front of us and pull out water bottles and snacks for the kids.

Eli turns to me and says, “So are you at your place now or Maggie’s?”

I register Maggie out of the corner of my eye, listening to our conversation. I probably shouldn’t say this, but I don’t stop myself.

“I’ve been staying at Maggie’s but I’m moving out after we get back,” I answer.

I see Maggie stiffen. “You are? When were you going to tell me about this?

Everyone freezes. The whole group falls silent.

“Don’t you think it’s time?” I say, trying to ignore all the eyes staring at me.

She huffs.

The crowd around us slowly dissipates until we’re the only two who remain. She glares at me. “So you thought it was a good idea to have that conversation with your brothers before you told me?”

I look at the ground and shift my feet. That was a pretty dick move.

“Sorry,” I mutter. I look up at her. “I need to go though.”

She inhales deeply through her nose.

“What did you think, Maggie? I was going to live at your place forever?” My voice is growing louder. Ian stirs a little, and I rub his back until he calms.

I look around. The rest of the group is gone – completely out of sight.

“We can’t do this anymore,” I say.

“Do what?”

“Play house. Fuck each other.”

She bristles. “It’s never been a problem in the past.”

I motion toward Ian. “Things have changed. Don’t you think it’s going to be a bit confusing for him to have parents who are fuck buddies but not in a relationship?”

She shoots me a look. “I doubt that’s the way we would explain it to him.”

“Seriously, Maggie. This isn’t healthy.”

She crosses her arms over her chest and narrows her eyes. “Is this because you went away last week and remembered what you were missing? I bet those other women are a lot more fun than me right now. You’d rather not have to pity fuck someone?”

My eyes nearly pop out of my head. Is this really what she thinks I’m doing when I’m away? Does she honestly think I fuck herout of pity?

“Maggie.” It’s a warning.

She holds up her hands. “Right. I know. I know. It’s against our rules. But I guess we don’t have rules anymore.”

I can’t even think of a response.

“I get it. It’s been a year and a half that you’ve put your life on hold. You only live once, right?” She puts her hands on her hips. “That was an impressive string of women who were at your apartment after we broke the contract. I don’t exactly fulfill all your needs, do I? Especially not right now.”

So this is why she was annoyed with me yesterday. Why does she even care?

“Who I fuck and how many women I fuck is none of your damn business,” I answer.

She makes ahmphsound.
