“You want to take a pregnancy test tomorrow?” he asks. His wrist is still firmly around mine.

“I’ll wait until Monday. I’m not really late yet. You know how my body is.”

He nods.

“It’s probably too early for a pregnancy test anyway.”

“Okay,” he tugs my wrist and pulls me into a hug. “Love you, Mags. See you tomorrow.”

I squeeze him a little and then let go. Once he steps away, I slowly close the door. I feel guilty, so guilty. I feel like I should have told him about Hugo. What’s there to tell? Declan

Iknock on the door, food in hand. As soon as she opens it, I know immediately something is wrong.

I set down the food so I can grab her shoulders and study her face. “What is it?”

Her face crumples and then she leans her head into my chest. Her whole body starts to shake. She’s not making a sound, but she’s sobbing.

I wrap my arms around her, resting my hand on the back of her head. I move slightly into her apartment and kick the door closed with my foot. Her body sags into mine. I just let her cry.

When she pulls back, I brush her hair out of her face. “What is it?”

She runs her hands over her eyes and then says, “My period started this morning.”

“Oh.”

She tilts her head to the ceiling, fighting new tears. “It hasn’t bothered me that much up until now.”

I know she’s been disappointed each month, but she’s never reacted like this before – or at least, she’s never shown it to me.

“I’m afraid something’s wrong.”

“Oh, Maggie,” I pull her back into my body.
